Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

This just want up.

Damn out of stock already.
I ended up ordering one of those bundles.
I’m thinking of selling the 1600 and just keeping the mobo. I should be able to get around $100 for the cpu.
My main rig has the x470 strix mobo and the 1700. When the next Ryzen series comes out, move the 1700 to the x370 mobo and put the new chip in the x470 mobo.
I had planned on getting a new case, but this deal was too good to pass up so that will have to wait a couple more months.

This thing is pretty impressive because of the size and it uses an AMD Ryzen APU running at 3.2 ghz or 3.6 ghz and supports up to 32 gigs of ram. The GPU is based on AMD latest mobile GPU technology based on vega. It can drive 4X4K displays and has PCI express port support. They claim it's twice as fast as a Macbook 13 inch screen.

Here it's with an RTX 2080 GPU running off of it.

Didn’t want to go digging through old threads so I figured this would be a good place to ask.

I’m looking to get back into PC gaming and I’m likely going prebuilt. Not gonna seriously start looking until closer to DOOM Eternal’s launch.

First question, what kind of performance increase would I see between a 2070 and 2080? TI seems a bit excessive for my needs.

Second, in terms of prebuilds, I see ibuypower mentioned quite a bit for overall value. Origin gets brought up a lot too. What ever happened to Alienware? I know it had a reputation for being overpriced but it seems less than Origin and the reviews are great for the Auroras.

Lastly, is it worth investing in a 4K monitor? Seems like kind of a waste at that size.

Thanks in advance.

the new AMD cpu/apu/gpu* are coming out soon, so if you want best possible system, i'd wait until then. additionally, the (current gen) should be a bit cheaper (although, they're pretty cheap right now, as it is).
ibuypower was good to me/seemed to be pretty solid, but all of those builders (them, cyberpower, etc) seemed to get pricier/less good than they used to be, imo. alienware is owned by dell and generally stupidly priced, although with decent systems (last i knew, anyway).

i'd stay away from intel CPUs at all costs, regardless.

4k would totally depend on what you're doing with it. ie: movies/tv/shit that's actually in that resolution or not.

*leaked specs indicate the new amd gpus are rather comparable with the rtx 2060/2070, but for prices (msrp) that aren't much lower than the respective nvidias.

If youre intent is to solely play single player games. Best to find a high resolution monitor that has freesync/gsync.

Now if you intend to also dabble in multiplayer games. High resolution monitors are pointless. You need to prioritizes a high refresh rate monitor; 144hz+.

Seeing as DOOM doesn't even have a release date yet I guess I've got plenty of time. Good to know more options are going to be coming soon.

Looking at pricing things out separately and building my own, it doesn't seem like much in the way of savings. With the same processor, graphics card, RAM I'm already pushing $1200 comparing to a $1900 Alienware.

Seems like if I pay a couple hundred dollar premium for someone else to build/cover my stuff it would be worth it. I haven't been into this in 10+ years.

I've got my 4k Samsung for movies/tv shows. I'm just wondering if having a screen that's smaller than 30" is going to have any sort of noticeable difference at a 4k resolution. Would almost strictly be for gaming.

Yeah I'm not much of a multiplayer gamer anymore. Would be heavily single player and any MP would pretty casual.

Might want to do some research if your goal is eternal, on 2016 several different reviewers stated that game in particular runs better in AMD graphics cards, plus free sync monitors are cheaper than g-sync.

Word, but FPS even in single player mode also benifits from high refresh too it feels like.

And this is why I went with 1080p 144hrz monitors, for FPS multiplayer and solo.

Only debate I have now is get 1440p instead of 1080p this time around in 144hrz.

I'll look into it. I'm not sure if Eternal is running on the same engine or not.

Definitely noticed the cost difference in the g-sync.

*shrugs*

i'd say ~$500* is a LOT to pay someone to build it... especially when you have no idea who exactly is building it.

also, that's using an i7... which is so fucking screwed right now. between spectre, meltdown, and zombieload - i would not buy an intel processor. intels are plagued with exploits and you'd be losing a good chunk of performance via background software to prevent the first 2 and disabling of hyperthreading to prevent zombie. intel's shit. seriously.

not only are AMD's cpu/apu outperforming intel, they're doing it for a fraction of the cost.

*vs alienware, since that's the baseline. i'm sure ibuypower/cyberpower/etc don't mark up quite that much

I don't think it would be $500 less. That's only including the three biggest parts I'd need. Still a lot to add, could be off base though.

I'll look into options I have with AMD.
