Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

Thanks I signed up on the list for it after I bought my card. Now I just have to wait perhaps a month or so for it when they launch. In the meantime, I guess I would have to keep my PC case open for weeks but it isn't so bad since we are still in the winter and spring season

yeah thats better then putting strain onto the power adapter

your other solution, which you probably wouldnt be down with, would be to buy a whole new PSU with the new ATX 3.0 standard, and pretty much rewire your entire rig. then you wouldnt need any adapters and you could just plug the 12VHPWR cable in from the psu to the gpu directly, and it would make for easier cable management

but that would be a headache and cost alot more money then just ordering the adapter and waiting a bit of time.

PNY VERTO OC GeForce RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X PCI Express 4.0 Video Card
They had it for stock on newegg so I made the purchase. I've been seeing more of the 4090s in stock if you check on microcenter and even Best Buy compared to in january. It seems to be more readily avaliable now.

Now I just need to either a u-turn/90 degree adapter for the card power supply as soon as they start manufacturing them from the site below

I would love to get a FE. I don't live near a Microcenter which blows

Where do you live at? When I was hunting for my card, I was checking out the Best Buy website to see if any are in stock. Sometimes they had it but by the time I clicked on reserve for the store pickup they were sold out. Now when I look at the site, they seem to have at least 3 in stock without anyone making a reserve for hours. The ones that appear to be plentiful are the Suprim cards which require the cooling system.

You can also try this site since the backorder line appears to be much shorter than it was a few weeks back

I recently upgraded my pc in june to a MPG Z690 Carbon motherboard with a I9-12900K because my old motherboard was malfunctioning and fried. I am still using the mid-sized tower case which was my mistake since its just a little under 9" in width. I don't know if I'm ready to rig it again at this stage

Seems like the FE is much harder to get despite the price being lower than other RTX 4090 cards on retail. That is without the scalpers overpricing it to 2k. The PNY and Asus ones seems to more plentiful on amazon with one of the vendors selling the PNY at a reasonable price at $1679. Best Buy hadthe FE at one time for $1599 on their website before I was able to click on the buy option a month ago.

Am I missing something about FE over AIB? Seems like AIB is better for cooling if you dont use water blocks and AIB checks the advantage boxes over FE.

I never owned a FE so Im new to the differences

Usually the AIB's have better overclocks. As I understand it with the 4090 the oc is really not that much better than the standard FE speeds, at least not enough to warrant the extra amount on the price tag. I might make an exception for the Aorus Waterblock since the it's so much smaller.

If you're in the US as well, Best Buy is the exclusive distributor of FE cards. It just comes down to whether or not you are willing to pay a bit more for custom cooling solutions from an AIB partner, Nvidia is pretty strict with overclocking and customization these days, not to mention they'll bin GPUs instead of giving them to partners.

I was sort of under the impression that people got the FE because it was more compact so it fit their PC case better and not have as many fans running as the AIB since they don't really try to overclock their cards

Some people might, but honestly, if you're springing for a 4090, making sure you can squeeze it in your existing case probably isn't top of mind. Just glancing at what Best Buy has, they're all triple slot and roughly comparable in dimensions.

The point of the FE is effectively to set a price ceiling for AIB partners and keep Best Buy happy. I can't imagine your average gamer, even one balling out for a 4090, is going to be trying to squeeze every degree of thermals out or seriously overclock their card.

Gotcha. So its just the pricing. It didn't really seem that much of a difference sinceI got the AIB one for $1630 before taxes. The scalpers on amazon are still trying to sell the founders edition for over 2k but the PNY versions are just 1.8k at average

Primarily, yes. There are some cards that are 2.5 or 2 slots with water cooling, and more than 3 slots with air cooling.

With how tight margins are for AIB, you can't really do much customization of a 4090 if you want to stay within $100 or $200 of a FE.

I suppose there's also build quality and customer service and warranties, but you're getting really nitty gritty at that point.

my 4070ti took up just over 3 slots. the 4090 looks like a thicc boy as well, and a fair bit longer

the new series of cards have got a fair bit of girth to them. i havent used the anti-sag bracket my card came with to prop my card up but i'm thinking maybe i should.

Yeah just looked it up and a lot of the 4070 Tis aren't that much lighter than a 4090, which is wild.

probably because of the massive heatsinks theyre putting on the 4070ti's which are a little over the top because they really dont seem to draw too much power or produce that much heat. asus is using the same coolers and shrouds on their tuf gaming 4070ti's as they are using on their tuf gaming 4080 and 4090 models. i dont think they really needed to do that with the 4070ti but they did it anyways. i think most other aftermarket manufacturers have been doing the same with their cooling solutions all the way down the product line. maybe theyll go with a dual fan and smaller heatsink and shroud configuration with the 4060/4070 models but we'll have to wait and see.

i havent been able to get my tuf card past 65 degrees and 265 watts while gaming, and often its staying in the high 50's while only drawing 220-250 watts. i think the coolers on these cards are a little bit overkill for how efficient they are on power. i'm getting 3090-3090ti performance with the temperatures and power draw of my old strix 2080. i'm almost blown away by just how efficient it is. i mean i cant really praise the card for its price tag, but i'm damn well satisfied with its power efficiency and its 1440p performance.

If I had to guess that's a vestigial feature from when Nvidia was trying to pass off 70 level silicon as an 80 level product.

ahh fuck. that was a stupid move on nvidia's behalf
It was a great plan if it worked (that kind of BS labeling has worked before, and it still works for mobile GPUs), but yeah it backfired. Had to pay off AIB partners to keep them happy enough and no Founders Edition. Although not sure if they would have done an FE for the 4080 12GB or if that was an olive branch later.

Finally I was able to get a 4090 card. Now I have a problem with the power connector cable sticking out upwards about 1.25" and I cant bend the cable lines at 90 degree without having the infamous 4090.
I’m still kind of stunned that nvidia designed it like that and didn’t make adaptors for it. I think that’s really telling that they know the hall is in their court
