Gaethje plans to confront winner immediately

In Conor's last 2 fights he was knocked out and stretchered out.

He is 1-3 at 155 and 1-4 overall since he beat Eddie in 2016, and he was stopped in every one of those losses.

I don't think even Dana's greedy ass would actually book Conor for a title fight at this point without at least 1 win. Sure they would make money, but EVERYONE would be calling them out on their bullshit and blatant absurdity.
Not happening now. it was all contingent upon what DP did and Dana saying Conor would get him when he is ready. That problem has been averted, thankfully. Bring on JG!

Meh?? Are you saying Conor did not earn his fw shot by beating Brimage, Holloway (future champ), Brandao (TUF champ), Poirier (future champ, #5 ranked), siver (10 ranked) and Chad (1 ranked)?

If you want to illustrate gifted title shots, use Brock as an example, not Conor. Conor still is undefeated at featherweight, was 13-0 there before he got his title shot in the UFC, 6-0 in the UFC, where as Brock was 1-1 in the UFC and 2-1 in MMA. Others examples = Yoel and Gus, who both were coming off losses and got title shots, Randy Couture, or even Sandhagen as of recent.

His title shot was earned against Siver; not Mendes. The KO vs. Poirier was good, but clipping someone behind the ear (which F'd Dustin's balance) doesn't = domination. I've landed that shot before and dropped fighters who were much better than me in the stand up.
Neither Holloway or Poirier were who they are now.

Anderson Silva didn't "earn" his TS either. It happens.
Lesnar was a massive star before he entered the UFC; and Randy's Greco-Roman wrestling was tailor made for beating Sylvia...also again, big star (for those days) in the UFC.

FWIW, I'm not saying that Conor couldn't have established himself as the FW GOAT had he stuck around. Still didn't really earn a title shot (which again was his fight against Mendes.)

There are conflicting versions of this. Conor stated he already had it wrapped up before the Siver fight, giving us this famous quote: "I would like Cub to win for the specific reason that he seems to think he has been promised the UFC title shot if he wins this fight against Frankie, so I want to him to win that contest, and then I will bake a freshly made pie and smack him clean in the face with it when I get the title shot.” In his view, he earned the ts with the Poirier win but the Siver fight was basically a giant Conor commercial for the American public to be introduced too him on prime time TV, and right after the New England Patriots won the AFC championship. It worked too, as the card broke all kinds of records and it was loaded with Irish fighters for the Irish populated Boston fans to gas up.

Holloway and DP were maybe not the same fighters as they are now, but both went on streaks after the loss to Conor and they were legit tests. That sword cuts both ways too, as THAT Conor was probably also a lot better than the one now who got spilled by silk sheets, took two years off, even retired (according to Kavanagh), and changed into a booze artist and an uncontrollable drug addict - a far cry from the bright eyed "60 g's baby!" Conor that was so beloved originally.

The point is, by the time Conor made it to Aldo, he earned it and then some, and even if he fought Aldo post Poirier there are dozens of examples of less earned ts - - - and keep in mind, Conor was also Europe's first "champ-champ" before he even got to the UFC as well, kinda like how Chandler only needed one win owing to his success outside the UFC. He could have sat out 189 but he said to Lorenzo pick who you want, and Lorenzo picked Chad as he thought he was the more stiff test and he was higher ranked. A lot of criticisms can be made of Conor, especially this post Mayweather version, but it just seems that the wrong criticisms are often made owing to some people's disdain for Conor (i.e. "ducker", "took the easy road", "cherry picker", "only fought midgets" etc).

Good post tho!

Agreed on nearly everything you said.
Frankly, it's hindsight that gives us insight on how great the wins over Max and Dustin really were.
There was a lot of stagnation in the division due to Aldo's longtime reign as champ.

I definitely don't consider myself a Conor hater.
While Conor probably didn't "deserve" the title shot; he sure AsF made the most of every opportunity that came his way.
I always hope that he wins at least enough to stay relevant and continue to give more fighters (most of whom I believe to be underpaid <for getting punched/kicked/elbowed/ in the head not because of some silly "fighter pay" debate>) at least one really good pay day in their UFC careers.

And if he goes on a title run or something, more power to him.

Edit: I imagine that you also remember him saying that he wanted to "get in, get rich, and get out."
It seems that he only worked hard enough to make the money. My guess is that we only see him now when he's working on a side project. First it was whisky; then McGregor Fast workout app. He'll have something else that he wants to promote and will have his followers and casual fans (no shade to the casuals) jumping on as well.

Bullshit. Lorenzo didn't pick Chad. They offered him Mendes and Frankie. He CHOSE Mendes.

Why the fuck would Lorenzo, who by all accounts is actually a fight fan and was will liked by fighters, pick Chad mendes fresh off a week long hunting trip who was literally eating Cheetos in Faber's couch when he got the call, out of shape and hadn't been in camp in months over a fresh Frankie coming off a win, who was in fight shape? Answer is he wouldn't. That's a bold face lie you tried to sneak in that story. They offered him Mendes and Frankie and Connor CHOSE Mendes.

My guy, atleast have sources! Lorenzo picked Chad because he was ranked higher, just nearly beat Aldo and they felt he was stiffer test. He felt that if they were going to invest more into Conor, they wanted too know that he was the real deal. This all "Chad out of shape on a hunting trip" did not come in until after the fact - he told them he was in shape and ready - that is on him, not Conor who did not know or care. Conor was sleeping and when woken up and asked, he said that he did not care who. My guy, where are you getting your info from???

https://www.mmamania.com/2015/7/1/8...chad-mendes-was-picked-over-frankie-edgar-mma

'"At the end of the day we looked also at...look, Mendes is formally ranked No. 1 ahead of McGregor. It would have been a little weird if we picked Frankie and then Chad would say, but I'm number one. Not that we always go distinctly by one, two or three, but both guys were available, and he was number one and Frankie was number two. I think looking at Mendes' past performances [helped]. That fight last fall against Aldo [at UFC 179] was one of the great fights in UFC history. In his last fight against Lamas he blew right through the guy. And it was like, you know what, he's got the momentum we feel like, and we feel like he deserves it. And quite honestly, it was funny because I was literally sitting in my office, and I was on Twitter or something and I think [MMA Fighting's] Luke Thomas tweeted something like, ‘one thing I know is not going to happen today is they're not going to announce that Mendes is the replacement.' And I was like, it's Mendes.""

This is precisely what I am talking about: people hate Conor so much that they just make shit up to fit their narrative of him being some coward ducker who is only interested in easy fights. Alot of criticisms of Conor can be made, but rarely do his detractors seem to make the right ones.
