FX's FARGO Discussion Thread

One of my favorite episodes this season, not to mention the funniest. The whole Dodd hostage situation was hilarious. Fargo is billed as a dark comedy crime drama and this episode brought in the comedy in spades.

I love how unpredictable but still maintaining excellent writing this season is.

Wonder why Hanzee killed Dodd. Hanzee seemed very loyal to Dodd and if he shot Dodd because of the name-calling, it seemed a bit shallow. Hopefully we'll get an explanation down the line why he did what he did. It was shocking but at the same time I was sorta expecting it when Hanzee started asking for a haircut. But glad Ed and Peggy are still alive.

Fatt Damon has one punch KO power. Plus his resistance to a guillotine choke is pretty good.

Loved the Dodd hostage stuff, his facial expressions were hilarious. Such a meathead, but damn funny -wish they'd done two episodes of it.

I agree with some in here that Dodd not killing Peg seems strange.. at 1st. But then you have to go back to all the stupid shit he did through out the show from lying to start the war to putting the cattle prod down.

They have gone above and beyond to demonstrate what an incompetent moron Dodd was pretty consistently. I mean, they were yelling it in our faces whenever he was on screen.

Anyways, I think Hanzee killing him was odd, but him wanting his haircut then telling Peg he was done with this life was kind of telling. I hope Hanzee gets a fitting death/ending, he's turned out to be a pretty likable bad guy for the most part. I see similarities in him to Anton Chiguhr which is badass. Maybe he gets a similar pathway out.

Great episode and I'm looking forward to the final 2 coming up here.

Do you guys think Peggy's friend at the hotel is dead or not? I'm guessing she's still alive.

I'd be down with that.

Another excellent episode, the initial scene with Dodd in the cabin, the stabbing, was really fantastic dark comedy.

As for Dodd not killing Peggy, remember he wanted to kick her ass a bit, he's pretty dumb and had to lay the trap for Ed in an uncertain window of time.

Im not clear on why they had Hanzee shooting Dodd either. the insults obviously pushed him a little, but they established him as unstable when he's off the reservation (sorry), in the bar scene, perhaps they simply overstated Dodd's overall authority over him.

A couple things, were the symbols over the bar where Hanzee had his shoutout the same as the symbols in Sheriff's home last week? And, Hangman game with Sioux Falls in the phone booth, multi layered foreshadowing, which I thought was clever.

After last week I was looking for Coen Brothers references, and then they go an recreate the gas station scene from No Country For Old Men, without really losing any of the tension. Also "going a little crazy down there by the lake"

Don't be. I lol'd.

I assumed he killed him because he wanted out. He probably could've just blamed it on Ed and Peggy, got the haircut and went on with his life, and the attention would be on Ed and Peggy even more for murdering Dodd.

The part where Hanzee was dealing with all the racist bullshit at the bar and then decided to kill everyone was great. When Dodd called him a mongrel he just decided "fuck this idiot too."

First season was great, second one not so much for my taste I don't know what it is but it's not that interesting and I am not that much emotionally invested in story/characters like I was in the first season.

I like the second season better, but I can see why some people might not like the stylistic differences. The first season was more narrative driven, and the second relies more on music and cinematography. For me the first season was a bit ruined by billy bob thornton being the unstoppable bad ass killer. He just isn't that good of an actor, and he was poorly cast in such a role.

I think the simplest explanation is the correct one... Dodd didn't kill Peggy right away because he really wanted to take his time with her.

Peggy is the one who captured him, tortured him, humiliated him... all while being a woman.

I think you nailed this.

Another easter egg - When they put the pillowcase over Dodd's head I think it was an ode to the kidnapping in the Fargo movie where Jerry Lundegaard's wife was tied up and also had the pillowcase around her head.

Will any of the Gerharts survive?

He took that course at the hotel and now he is actualized

Yeah, might be a combination of these two explanations.

So what we're all the drawings in hanks office??? Anybody???

I'm only on episode 2 of Season 2, and I really hate the athletic, explosive goon from Kansas City. Why the hell does he talk that way? I hope that character dies in the next episode.

I used to feel that way too, but it was really good to get him back after most of an episode filled with the Butcher, Peggy, and Dodd.

I really think Hanzee told the truth when he said he wanted out of this life. The insults Dodd threw at him was just the last straw.

Also, I think the haircut scene was a reference to Samson (who Dodd mentioned during the hanging scene) who would lose his supernatural strength if his hair was cut. But when the cops showed up, Hanzee gets up before his hair is cut, to give them one hell of a last stand. (Thats my guess anyway)
