Pine Barrens: Fargo Edition

Thought it was great. I hope the Cossack isnt dead and dont believe he is.

I thought of Pine Barrens too as I was watching the episode.

I also love how every episode of Fargo has a few slick references to the original film, I usually catch two or three per episode. All these subtle little nods.

This episode, for example: a car slowly drives by an insane sight on the side of the road, kind of jaw-dropping as they drive by - and then the evil people jump in their car, catch up to them & kill them for being witnesses. Same as in the movie.

Or last episode, Nikki tries to climb out the motel window but the cops grab her and drag her in to arrest her, same exact thing that happens to William H. Macy in the film.

There are always a few of those per episode it seems like.

It would be hard to pin the murder on a dead person and explain why the murderer was also dead.

It still seems more complicated than it needs to be. Setting Nikki up for the murder and then killing her while in police custody seems like it would add more doubt that she wasn't the one who really killed Ray.

Maybe I just had a mind fart, but why did Varga's henchman not just kill Nikki while she was in the motel?

The Asian dude Meemo was waiting in the bathroom to kill Nikki when Varga called to clean up the murder scene in Ray's apartment. When Meemo came back to the motel to kill Nikki, the cops were already there.

OK, that was pretty awesome. Nikki and Mr. Wrench make one hell of a team.

Also, I'm dying to know what the Widow Goldfarb's angle is. She has an agenda, but I don't think she could be in cahoots with Varga. Has any other character from previous seasons had any connection to St. Louis?

I feel like this week's episode was a bit of a letdown after last week's awesomeness. Just a lot of setup for the finale.

Massive drop off in the last two episodes imo. Far too much style over substance and the whole thing now feels like its cracking under weight of it's own ridiculousness.

Someone made a good prediction earlier in this thread. Seems like Varga is nothing but a con man.

Looks like they're saving everything for the finale, Should be a packed episode.

Some observations:
- Something is definitely up with Goldfarb
- I thought Nikki and Wrench were messing with Emmitt's head in last weeks episode, but all their attention seems to be on Varga. She seemed surprised when Varga told her that Emmitt killed Ray.
- Nikki and Wrench are an awesome team
- In next weeks promo clip
Emmitt says "You work for Varga" to someone off camera. So looks like there is another established character who is secretly in on Varga's operation. It's either Goldfarb or Winnie Lopez
- Varga is cracking, He's in over his head with Nikki and his downfall is imminent.

Wasn't the St. Louis mob a background thing in the show?

Actually feel the opposite. I think the show is sort of the reverse of season 2 (with the UFO moment in the penultimate episode which I didn't hate but thought they should have done more subtly, and the slow finale), where things have been getting more hectic compared to the slower (but not bad in the least to me) earlier episodes, it feels like it's all coming together for me.
This past episode they really went in with subtly explaining the whole opening line of "this is a true story" with the true part fading away. Where what people believe starts to become reality even if it's not the truth. Then Gloria essentially needing to tell Winnie about her issues with the sensors and such and feeling unreal for her Shroedinger's Cat like situation to go away.

I think Varga is meant to represent the Devil. So yes, a con man of sorts. Varga does seem to have limitless connections tho -all those people showing up in trench coats in the lobby, the random Asian dude to take the fall for the murders, the hitmen he has at his disposal. Would be weird if they just revealed there was nothing behind it after all. Would be hard to explain all those things using that context.

Nikki tossing the dummy grenade in the truck cracked me up, especially after Jet Meemo realized what just happened lol. The look on his face was great as he picked that thing up off the ground.

Varga's face to face with Nikki was great too. Well written and well acted scene. 'I'm really beginning to dislike you' had me cracking up -Varga's delivery is always so perfect. Was nice to see someone legit outfox Varga. Nikki is a hustler taking on a con man, its a cool dynamic to see them confront one another. We still don't even know why Nikki was on parole (do we?) so its nice to see them slowly reveal her cards in scenes like that.

Hopefully we get to see Mr. Wrench fuck some shit up in the finale but I suspect he'll finally get caught up, or maybe he does make it out and they keep finding ways to toss him in scenes of future seasons (he has appeared in some form or another in all 3 seasons now).

Who was the guy that took the fall for the murders? The way it was shot, made me think we were supposed to recognize him from a past season. He had a big scar, so I'm racking my brain as to who he was.

Was he anyone?

An obese Asian with a scar

That was the Kansas City Mafia. But now that I think about it, they're both in Missouri, so the Widow Goldfarb could be a member. Given the time frame they could be making a play to get their territory in the region back.

After all, in-universe it has only been 4 years since Malvo wiped out the Fargo Syndicate.

Im wondering if Goldfarb is working with Varga -I think this has to do with the forms Varga wants Emmit to sign.
