As an American, I've NEVER seen an A&W outside of California. Before I went to CA for the first time, I only knew it as a soda brand, had no idea that they had restaurants. Then again, they have locations in states I've lived in, but not the region. They have 1 location in the state I live in now, but it's about 85 miles (137 km) away. A&W Canada is A LOT bigger. A&W has locations all over the US, but not too many outside of California and surrounding states.

It's kinda weird how the brand is split up. With regards to the root beer itself, Dr Pepper distributes it in the US and other countries outside of Canada, but in Canada, it's Coca-Cola. Keurig Dr Pepper owns the rights to the brand everywhere besides Canada and they license it to the original restaurant chain in the US.i was shocked when i first saw in the states as i always thought it was ubiquitous to Canada as Tim Hortons. Turns out they used to be a singular brand originating in California but in the 70's the Canadian franchises completely split from the US corporations with their own different menus only sharing the name and the name of the "papa burger"
It is also significantly better in Canada (which is odd considering American fast food / burger places are so much better overall than Canadian)
I can't believe I'm admitting to this but I would love to have Captain D's back...
I just remember stopping their on vacation road trips as a kid. We wanted something fast and also something we couldn't get in the Midwest. Sonic was another favorite for us back then too, but of course we all know they're doing pretty good.
Captain D never went any where bud. He’s right he— wait you meant the restaurant, never mind
Yes. I live in the Boston area and was raised here. Both my brother and I were surprised to see A&W restaurants when we first visited CA about 20 years ago. There's one A&W left in MA and it's on the Cape. About 85 miles from where I live.A&Ws were in New England 30 years ago. Aren't you from NE?
I never see em around me past the 80s but In canada their everywhere, and pretty damn goodAlways liked A&W. They just have poor corporate marketing/commercialism. A&W should have never branded away from their classic look, that's A&W tradition.
Yeah, my parents didn't take me though.Friendlys were all over New England then.
About 20 years ago I got thrown out of a friendlys for being too high and reeking like weed. I just wanted a burger and a sundae.
RR has made a comeback. The were almost extinct in the 90s. Think the NJ turnpike had the lat couple of them.I was hoping to see Roy Rogers on that list...![]()
