Five outdated burger chains attempting to make a comeback

Obama made them switch to fake meat grown in a peach tree dish that will give you a zap when you eat a real cheeseburger.

That "peach tree dish" malapropism is on brand for Georgia at least. :)

As an American, I've NEVER seen an A&W outside of California. Before I went to CA for the first time, I only knew it as a soda brand, had no idea that they had restaurants. Then again, they have locations in states I've lived in, but not the region. They have 1 location in the state I live in now, but it's about 85 miles (137 km) away. A&W Canada is A LOT bigger. A&W has locations all over the US, but not too many outside of California and surrounding states.

i was shocked when i first saw in the states as i always thought it was ubiquitous to Canada as Tim Hortons. Turns out they used to be a singular brand originating in California but in the 70's the Canadian franchises completely split from the US corporations with their own different menus only sharing the name and the name of the "papa burger"

It is also significantly better in Canada (which is odd considering American fast food / burger places are so much better overall than Canadian)

It seems like A&W is doing much better in Canada than it is in USA.

A&Ws were in New England 30 years ago. Aren't you from NE?

It's kinda weird how the brand is split up. With regards to the root beer itself, Dr Pepper distributes it in the US and other countries outside of Canada, but in Canada, it's Coca-Cola. Keurig Dr Pepper owns the rights to the brand everywhere besides Canada and they license it to the original restaurant chain in the US.

I can't believe I'm admitting to this but I would love to have Captain D's back...:(
I just remember stopping their on vacation road trips as a kid. We wanted something fast and also something we couldn't get in the Midwest. Sonic was another favorite for us back then too, but of course we all know they're doing pretty good.

Captain D never went any where bud. He’s right he— wait you meant the restaurant, never mind

Yes. I live in the Boston area and was raised here. Both my brother and I were surprised to see A&W restaurants when we first visited CA about 20 years ago. There's one A&W left in MA and it's on the Cape. About 85 miles from where I live.

There were A&W's when I lived in FL, but they were about 200+ miles away. Not as much distance in MA, but they were probably way out in the 'burbs somewhere or in cities outside Boston. I always lived in inner-ring suburbs like Cambridge, Somerville, Arlington and Brookline. Spent basically all of my time there and in Boston proper, but not necessarily every Boston neighborhood either.

I wasn't spending much time at all in places like Roslindale or Hyde Park. Suppose they could have "hid" one there from me. :)

Always liked A&W. They just have poor corporate marketing/commercialism. A&W should have never branded away from their classic look, that's A&W tradition.
I never see em around me past the 80s but In canada their everywhere, and pretty damn good

A&W is still huge in Canada but as far as I know outside the name it’s not affiliated in anyway with the chain in the US.

As burger chains go A&W (Canada) is really good - good burgers, great root beer, GOAT tier onion rings.

I haven't had A&W in nearly 2 decades, still remember the floats I used to drink there. I wonder if those chains are going to have better quality in mind because its the thing that went downhill for old chains.
