Finnegan's Wake

MMA Class:

1 1/2 hours

Kickboxing:
3 minute rounds. Held the mits one round, then switched out, etc.
Rd 1: 1-2's Really focused on keeping my right elbow oinned to the side
Rd 3: same. 1-2's moving in and out of attack range/ circling
Rd 5: 1-2-3's, again focused on stance and movement.

Grappling:
Well Fight_Song, my instructor saw your comment on my sparring video and agreed:
Shrimping Drill: One person had to try and maintain side control while the other shrimped to regain gaurd.
3 2-minute rounds each position
Subimission work:
Review of armbars
-armbar from guard -drilled 20 times or so
-armbar from butterfly- drilled 20
-armbar from mount-drilled 20
-armbar from guard to other arm armbar-drilled 20

Review of Triangles
Triangle from gaurd, emphasis on shrimping sideways to cinch it in deeper.
Triangle from gaurd during attempted gaurd pass:
-drilled each for about 10 minutes straight.

Guard Passing:
-sit back, push down on hips, scoop and dump soi you land in side control, There has to be a shorter name for it than that. Did this 10-15 times. Worked w/ a new guy on this a lot.
-Elboe in the knee, pin the leg to the ground, step over.
Did this about 30 times.

Done.

Impressions:
Finally! The new guy who came to class tonight is 218 lbs. Hopefully, I'll have a sparring partner that is actually around my current weight. We are set to spar tomorrow. He's a bit of a wild striker, but he won't be doing any drunken monkey rolls.
Technical stuff: For some reason, I just can't seem to get the armbar from mount to work right. I leave way, way too much space for them to escape out the back when I begin to fall to the side.

Gear purchased: 100 lbs, 6 foot long Thai style heavybag,
leather shin/ instep gaurds from CSI. Hopefully, it will arrive some time next week.
One of the advantages of living in the Louisville area is that a UPS recieving center is only 20 minutes away. I get deliveres pretty fast usually.

Did I ever post you that Marcelo Garcia side control escape video?

Good stuff, look for it, iirc the username on youtube is worldmartialarts.

Also, when working to get back guard/halfguard under side control, work your arms the same time you shrimp.

One thing the MG video emphasizes that is great is what he calls an "effective bridge". Bring your ankles as close as possible to your ass so you get a huge bridge.

Thanks for the heads up juan. Tonight, the technique was demonstrated as:
Put one hand or elbow against the hip. Put the other against the collarbone/ neck area, shirmp hard out and slide the knee under.

MMA:
3 hours.

Drilled takedowns with the grappling bag for 10 minuter or so. Showed the new guy a couple different ways to wrap the hands.
10 minute warmup run/ stairs/ run backward/ stairs, stretching, etc.
Drilled combos on the heavybag for 10 minutes or so. Still loosening up.

Sparring:

Round 1: light contact San Shou rules (striking w/ takedowns, no ground work). 5 minutes

Round 2:
Sparred against my instructor with the 16 oz gloves. I did better than last time. I regained half gaurd a couple of times. He said that I hit him with a shot that caused him to go blind for a few seconds. Still didn't stuff/ sprawl out of any of his takedowns, but I did better on the ground overall. Videoed

Round 3: Sparred a new guy, Matt. He is my weight class. Did really well stuffing takedowns/ working combos. Videoed.

Round 4: Crazy Wing Tsun guy. Again, nearly KO'd him w/ a hook. Ate him alive w/ low kicks.

Round 5: grappling demo for the women's self defense class. Crazy woman spazzed and just held me in a side headlock for two minutes or so. The MMA instructor and I demoed shrimping.

Impressions: to be continued....most was videoed w/ two different cameras. I'll put them together tomorrow or tonight.

Also, found out that a NAGA tourny is coming up in March in Ohio. A few guys from the class are going to enter. Heavyweight is 200-225. I'll be entering at this weight in the novice level.

Having competed in NAGA, I'd seriously reconsider competing if I were you. It's single elim, so you may only get one match for 85 bucks. Plus you have to wait 4-5 later than the scheduled time to compete. There's also a ton of sandbagging.

Yeah sandbagging is a huge problem at those comps, the comp had guys with 3+ years of Gi BJJ doing novice or beginner no-gi for instance. Also training MMA doesn't really help, because you train sooo many different things and alot of the guys you will compete against in grappling may work in grappling alone 4 times a week. You should be able to do well at HW, we had beginner and novice grouped together because of lack of people, and alot of HW's were fat out of shape guys.

Density Day:

100 Snatch Challenge:
See how fast I could perform 100 dumbell snatches w/ 45 lbs dumbell. Since I wasn't sure if it was 100 for each arm or total (my internet was down pre workout) I went ahead and did 200 total, 100 for each arm while noting the 100 total mark.

Dumbell Snatch x 100 (45 lbs) : 5:12
Dumbell Snatch x 200 (45 lbs): 10:51

10 minute rest

100 medicine ball slams (25 lbs medicine ball) : 2:32

Impressions:
I've got a wicked pump going on, like so pumped it hurts.

Awesome work Finnegan, I really need to invest in that Ross program you suggested, seems like it's really working. Keep it up!

I need to try the 100 snatch challenge. If I remember correctly, the rules stated that you could do however many reps with whichever arm. So like, 50 with the right, 50 with the left, 99 and 1, 70/30, etc.

P.S. - How's your medicine ball holding up? I ripped the shit out of mine after repeated slams.

My "medicine ball" is homemade. I made it out of a basketball, sand, a pillow case, and then throughly cocooned the whole thing w/ Gorilla Tape. Its help up amazingly well. For the slams, I slam it on puzzle mats. It gives it a bit better bounce, and obviously saves it from the concrete.

-As far as Naga goes, I'll talk with the other guys about the issues you guys brought up. I think, more than anything, its just nice to have a date, at least one fight, and a goal to strive toward.

Im going to be starting the Ross 50 day program next week, with some tweaks. I imagine our logs are going to be looking pretty similar for awhile...
