Finnegan's Wake

Bodybuilder.

Just kidding. Great results in a short amount of time dude.

No thong? I'm disappointed.

How heavy is the heavy bag you and Bort were tossing back and forth?

75 lbs. I need a bigger one. That may be my next major equipment purchase. I'm thinking a 100 lbs, 6 foot Thai bag. That shoudl fit in the dungeon well enough.

didn't know you posted a vid until you mentioned it.

1) camera man sucks. lol. the constant shifting never lets the camera focus so you're blurry... unless you guys are ust insanely fast :P

2) if he's going to use a boxing stance where he's turned tot he side, just low kick the shit out of him since he has no way to defend. once he starts respecting the low kick, fake, then high kick him in the head.

3) put on shin pads and 16 oz boxing gloves. those gloves look too small to swing with respectable force. if you don't respect the punches, you won't learn to defend them. you need to get bopping people and get bopped back. maybe you were but it was hard to tell. all the kicks were less than half speed because of no shin pads. you don't want to get in the practice of throwing half-assed.

4) you duck your head a bit and get to worried about the goofy shit he was trying to throw. do your thing. cut him off in angles and step in for your combos and pop out of range when you're not throwing. get used tot his and fake to step into range and see how he reacts, but actually pop into range and unleash a combo.

5) not bad at all. once you step in, you start turning your stance from square to a side boxing stance like him. if someone double legged you or low kicked you, you know what's going to happen.

the hardest guys to fight are the goofy random guys because you can't predict the shit they're about to do. in a month you'll pick this type of guy apart with just the boxing/MT basics. straight punches, hooks, and mt kicks, quick sting jabs would pick his game apart.

also, he looks every uncomfortable when you get close to him. get close ad nasty and dirty box him. he's probably not used to this and these is where you can use your strength and posture to push him around. watch randy couture get up close on someone.

summary: bigger gloves, shin pads, and a new camera man.

Thanks for the observations, Fight_Song. I've got the shin pads ordered already. We were using Century MMA bag gloves (approx 6 oz) at much less than full power. Until he decides to wear some fucking headgear, nothing with power is coming from me. I've got a pair of 16 oz gloves as well, but again, he does not. I may have to pick up a spare pair for such occasions.
As has been noted, I really need to work on my footwork. This is sparring session #3. So far, it has went from: me with a busted lip/ bruised nose/ ringing ear/ rocked three times to only slight bruising on my nose w/ him hobbling home from my 1/4 power low kicks- to this time: me unscathed, him limping w/ a black eye.
Hopefully, I'll get a copy of the other video, which is much, much cleaner and easier to see what was happening; and from better angles. Hope that the grappling vid makes it as well.
As far as the camerawoman, she had an injured leg, but was willing to tape it for me, so I can't give her too much hell.

From Alan Goode
3 things that I noticed.

One, I think Brandon already said this but...don't move straight back. Angles!

Two, unless you're circling eachother with a good distance try to avoid taking a step with both feet. You don't want to step with left, step with right to move. You want step slide, step slide. If that makes any sense. Cro Cop takes steps, he just walks down his opponent. You're not Cro Cop.

Three, Pop that jab, don't push it. Really make it snap.

I couldn't see much more, I was getting sick from the moving camera and the guy doing his kung fu shit. Smack that mother fucker when he does that in serious sparring, that won't help you learn much.

Comments:

Bagwork - interesting stance. I'd figure since you're training your hands for mma, you'd take a less boxing-centric stance. Remember, you'll be defending kicks and takedowns, etc. so having your fists at or above your temples can spell distaster. and bigger gloves so you can throw harder

Sparring:

  • you throw good low kicks... make sure you not only set them up with punches (which i think you did), but once you get him off balance (easy since he's hopping all over), throw 2-3 straights and keep him backing up
  • make sure you are circling and not backing straight up (a huge problem for me)
  • bigger gloves (same reasons as fightsong)
  • that guys an idiot. you guys a nice thai clinch (but maybe not having your elbows tight enough together), and he thinks he can block them all and not take any damage. that's just foolish.
  • tell him to put on some gear so you can spar for real. or maybe he just wants glorified shadowboxing
  • when he throws those silly side kicks at your legs, make him pay with a nice straight 2 or a mid-kick as he's off balance and backing straight up
  • you didn't look tired.. great job keeping hands up
  • if he puts his arms straight out at you and does that stand still thing (around 1:38 of vid) drill him in the leg... please

just a few notes as i was watchin

Good job on the before and after.
I wish more people would do it: though none of us are body builders, it is good motivation to actually SEE the progression people have made, especially when fat loss is involved.

I think I'll do the same once my fight training starts October 15th.

Your bag work and sparring vids looks good, kind of a lot like what me and the nerd table crew do, except none of us do that Genki Sudo kung fu stuff when sparring like your partner.

Thanks again everyone. I'm going to do a lot of footwork drills this week. Thanks for all the suggestions/ observations.

To be honest, I doubt I'll ever get this guy in a serious spar. He is an instructor in Wing Tsun, and is already referring to me as a "trained martial artist." He wants to learn, but he doesn't want to lose.
I choked him nearly unconscious with the anaconda choke that same day cause he wouldn't tap. I let it go when he started gurgling. Same thing with the straight armbar. I had it locked in and he wasn't going anywhere, but he refused to tap so I let it go. You'll see it in the video if I get it.

Once the class gets a couple more LHWs-HWs, I'll get a better sparring partner, hopefully one that kicks my ass.

As far as the low kicks go, I drill him with them all the time. I grab his wrist when he leaves it out there and kick.

Next week, I'm going to ask him if he wants to spar old Pancrase rules (that is striking standing w/ no strikes on the ground, correct?), since we are doing standup and grappling separate right now. I think the threat of takedowns will expose a lot holes in both of our styles.

Oh, and the main reason I wore the smaller gloves for bagwork was simply so I could hit the buttons on the camera to turn it on.

Oh and Bubble Boy: the Turkish and sandbag getups have paid huge dividends in my ground game already. My ability to stop sweeps in awkward positions is much, much better.

Impressions:
Fuck yeah! Hitting a deadlift PR, without straps, is an awesome feeling. I had to cleanse myself of my "metro-pump" workout last night, and since deadlifts are the soul cleansing method of S&P, chose to go for a DL PR. I hitched a little half way up (weight started to go down) but I fought through it and locked it out.
The core work I did was also to drive the metroness out. Full contract twists and anvil side bends (wrapped a chain around the anvil's waist, cinched it tight with enough room to get my hand in, and did side bends with it) did the trick.
All in all, very happy with tonight.

nice work man..what is the goal for deadlifts?
I always feel cool when I start to add weight to five plates..

Short term goal (by end of the year) is 550.
After that, I switch to Zerchers, where the goal will be to work back to 405 range and beyond if possible.

The problem with deadlifts...adding 5-10 pounds is no small task..

are you going to try to hit it with straps, then without? or are you going balls to the wall and leaving the straps behind?

My grip held just fine tonight. I'll use the straps when it is an issue and for rep work at higher weights. Seems my grip is finally catching up with my pulling strength.
It took it about 6 months.

sounds about right...

When I first started throwing the straps in the bag, I went from 495 to aout 375 using a alternating grip....my lack of grip strength as it related to deadlifts, not only hurt my ability to grip the bar, but fucked up the entire lift (seemed harder all around).. took me awhile to get that up to snuff.

This is a bit random, but I wanted to give you credit finnegan. I read very logs regularly here, but I make sure to check yours everyday. It's always badass and inspirational. Keep it up, it cuts down on my excuses when it comes to the gym.

Thanks Krossinc. A couple logs that do that for me are Standard's log (even though I rarely post in it) and DEVILsSON's.

Helluva nice DL PR, bro!

Excellent.

As stated before, Deadlift PR's are few and far between for most of us.

Congrats!
