Finnegan's Wake

Awesome stuff as always Brandon. I'll have to re-read this when I can sit down and watch the video.

Misses + Tamil, post videos and let me know when they're up (PM works!) and I'll do my best :) I usually wait to sneak on to the computers at uni so I don't have to wait 6 hours for the video to load up ha

Okay. Rewatched the vids and I see what you mean about the range and head/body movement issues. I'll have to work on this a bit more.
At least we finally got okayed to take the headgear off. Since we've got fights coming up, I'll be sure to get a vid of a hard sparring session that I can put some power into the punches.
Thanks again Brandon. By the way, do you have anything on your plate anytime soon?

ahaha....i'd hate to be your sparring partner...now that you plan on putting 'some' power in your punches....*hides in ians corner*...

Fight-wise? No, I actually have been out of the boxing gym because the national team sparring times are seriously conflicting with my school stuff, so I've been doing WSFSB + 3 days of grappling + 4 conditioning stuff and boxing, 3 on/1 off, 2-a-days. Trying to get back to fight shape and then once school smooths out going to hop back into the fisticuffs.

I'm competing in a grappling tournament in Scarborough, Ontario on February 9th so we'll see how that goes

Impressions:
First time conventional deadlifting since I hit the 600. Form still sucks.
Catch Rows are fucking awesome, and I'll do them with love from now on. I wish I had of done them in the complex w/ the deadlifts. They'd go well w/ weighted oullups or BORs in a complex as well. Next time...

I've been looking, but cannot find. What's a catch row?

I sorta made them up..

glad you liked them man...

most people look at me like I'm crazy, then ask me how to get bigger arms..

I'm glad there are crazy people on this forum looking for an edge.

Huh, that looks kinda cool. Might have to try 'em out one if these days.

Explosive rowing motions are kind of difficult to come by, but this one is tits. I can see immediate crossover benefits (ripping people's legs from under them on takedowns comes to mind)

Boxing:

Double End Bag:
4 three minute rounds, 30 seconds rest w/ sprint in place jump rope x 30 seconds between rounds.

Rd 1: 1's, 1-1's, 1-2's (focus on ripping right shoulder back and generally doing everything Brandon said)
Rd 2: 1-2's, 1-1-2's, 1-2-1-2's (same)
Rd 3: 1-2-1-2's, 1-2-slip-1/2's, 1-1-2-1's
Rd 4: Advancing 1's, 1-2's, 1-1's

Bas Rutten's All Around Fighting:
3 three minute rounds w/ one minute rest

Impressions:
I used a balled up wrist wrap in my left shoulder to keep my chin down throughout the double end bagwork. Its a bit harder than I thought to do, but I only dropped it twice (both on doubling up the jab).
Sprawl is getting a bit faster.
In other news, I did this workout w/ my new Amber Boxing Steel Cup on. All I have to say is that I can't wear this around children.

MMA:
2 1/2 hours.

Warmup:
3 rounds, Bas Rutten Thai rounds (2 shadowboxing, 1 on "Bob".

Padwork:
worked w/ a guy on his low kicks a bit, then held the pads as he gave a round of Bas a try. He then held them for me for a round.

Sparring:

Round 1:
3 minutes, kickboxing. I worked mostly on head movement, and played around w/ cross gaurd.

Round 2: Grappling. Meh.

MMA Sparring:
3 bouts, each 3 three minute rounds w/ one minute rest; one round rest between bouts.

Bout 1 highlights:
Good head movement.
I tought my sparring partner all about why he should use head movement too.
I threw a lot more combos and kicks.
stuffed most takedowns
worked ground n pound

Lowlights:
Tough time passing gaurd, partially due to the bigger Truth training gloves.
Ate a kick the body that was not nice
Generally felt "off"
A little gun-shy
leaned my head back too much. Got away with it for now...

Bout 2:
Highlights:

Clinch! I did really well in the clinch this whole bout, getting it at least once a round. Jerked his head around, knees to thighs, ribs, etc. Lots of dirty boxing as well.
Still stuffed most takedowns and got a few of my own (leg trip during tie up twice)
Submitted him round two with a kimura (he had my back, I locked it up and slid to gaurd to finish.
Got mount and worked some GnP from there.

Lowlights:
Nearly got guillotined.
Still couldn't pass gaurd, so I just stood up w/ him still attached a couple times.
Too predictable in my striking. I would check a lowkick and jab. He started timing this, slipping and countering.
Nearly got submitted at the end of Rd 1 w/ the exact same kimura that I ended up getting him with
Targeting was off for body kicks.

Bout 3:
Highlights:

We went a bit harder on this one.
I landed a lot of jabs and a superman punch
Flurried him until he shelled up and landed a really nice left hook to the body.
Stuffed all of his takedowns this bout but one.
Kicks were good this round. Inside leg kick, liver, and lead left head kick (pulled it, but it
connected)
Finished strong with a nice toe to toe exchange

Lowlights:
It was his turn to teach me about dropping my hands. He landed a really good left hook that stunned me a bit.
Got popped in the nose pretty well when I was leaning back and jabbing.
Sloppy takedown attempts for me
Elbows too high and ate a good right hook to the body

Impressions:
Overall, I did well today. The new gear (Pro Performance mouthgaurd, Steel cup) worked well and were much more comfortable than their cheaper cousins. I was glad that my sparring partner started exploiting my openings. A few bruises in training will do me some good. I dominated the ground game w/ GnP, and used my jab more effectively at keeping him away when he moved in. Threw a lot more combos, flurries, etc today as well.

I probably missed this, but when will you be fighting? Last thing I know, you turned a fight down due to lack of insurance.

Well, it turns out that I do have insurance since I won't be going to the new job for another month or so, if at all. So March 8th if the promoters put me on the card. I got cleared to fight yesterday by the doctor. Just waiting for the blood work to come in, and then it'll be up to them.

"Flurried him until he shelled up and landed a really nice left hook to the body."

*gets lost in Finn's eyes*

Bless your heart. A nice simple (and thus effective + high percentage) one is a 1-2-1-2-3B. The first 1-2-1 is just a "pedalling pop" one (where you chug your feet to get a bit of weight shift without committing to a big torso rotation), you put some mustard on the second 2 while leaning hard out forward + to the left (10 o clock), then rip the 3B to regain your stance and be in a good spot to angle in, or follow up (since he could very well have the "I got kicked in the balls, but my balls are in my chest" feeling now).

^^^ Will try that, too.

*awaits Brandon's benevolence*

Tam, was hoping to do it yesterday but we got about 25cm of snow crapped all over us, and I was completely snowed in. Monday would be next day I'm around high-speed internet, so I'll hook it up for ya then
