Finnegan's Wake

Nice. I never land any leg locks except for Achilles locks, and they don't really count.

What do you find to be the limiting factor on your get-ups? Is it really core strength or holding the weight at lockout? I always feel strong enough to core-wise, but on my first attempt at 85lbs, my arm just gave out. The final transition to standing was the breaking point. Got it the second time, though.

Balance more than anything. I need to work on technique to get good numbers w/ the Turkish get up. My core is fine, arm is fine, but when I move to make the transition from kneeling to standing, it all goes to hell.
Now that I think about it, I'm probably not locking my elbow properly or drawing my lat back enough. One or the other. I'll have to give them a go again soon. Maybe tomorrow at open mats (70 lbs is the heaviest dumbell the school has, so it'll have to do.)

Do you use the lunge technique or the squat one?

Lunge. It's just more natural feeling, and on really heavy ones (esp sandbags) I can't think of how the squat technique would possibly be any benefit.

How's your half guard game? You ever check out Eddie Bravo's stuff on half guard? It's really fuckin' good

finn my harness was good for 80lbs which was all i had in the house at the time as i didn't bother getting 45's from my garage... mind you 80 for the neck isn't too bad

alright finny, heavy lifting is being put on hold. time to get conditioning....any tips?

Nevermind, I'm going w/ the ATP one:

Start slow. Conditioning burns you out pretty fast if you aren't used to it. I, of course, love sledgehammer training. Start with a gaol of say 250 swings for time. Rest 10 minutes, then do some lower body type of stuff (jumping squats or even just 8 rep squats w/ a barbell w/ only 10 seconds rest in between for 4 minutes).
If you have one, wear a mouthgaurd while you train. The limited oxygen supply while you train will work you harder.
Also, are we talking about fat loss as well, or just straight up conditioning? If you want to add it fat loss, I'd add in some sprints. Basically, do something like:
Day 1: Density training (50.20's, timed exercises, Complexes, etc)
Day 2: GPP
Day 3: Sprints or Interval/Oly lifting

On any of these days, you could also do some normal lifting if you wanted. This style of training will work both your aerobic and anaerobic systems. If you feel froggy, add in a heavy lifting day once a week as well.

well i havent done a lick of conditioning for 6 months. i couldnt even do that stuff right now you just mentioned to me. i do have a mouth guard so ill try that. did you see the all access with silva and he wears a snorkel? crazy.

talking about everything. im about 230 now and could drop a good 30lbs or so and my conditioning sucked before when i did stuff but like i said, i was at 6 months of doing nothing.

That's the one I have Finn, really good but won't fit well if you have a small head. You don't strike me as a person having a small head though, so you should be fine.

My head is god-like in girth. I need a huge one.

Impressions:
Pretty good conditioner today. No one to spar with, so I got some solo skill work in. Looks like Wing Tsun guy has seen the light and is joining the MMA class. When he learns the ground game, he'll do pretty well at amatuer level.
He finally saw the videos too, and wanted to here the criticism, so I told him. He dismissed some of it, but thought about some of the other stuff.

He's gonna piss people off with those Wing Tsun kicks, too, but maybe he'll use that to his advantage :). At least it looks like it's a step in the right direction.

Hah, keep him sheltered from the 5+ pages of bashing he's taken in this log, too...

He doesn't know about the log, and those are pretty far back anyway. He asked for what other people thought about his stuff, so I told him that most people just went "What the Hell is that?!?". I relayed the constructive criticism as well (gaurd to high, walking forward instead of advancing, center line attacks, etc.
He understands that he'll get a lot of bashing from MMA guys who think his stuff won't work, but he has a good attitude about it in that the reason he spars w/ MMA guys is to find out what does and doesn't work in his arsenal.
Again, I've never had a problem with him trying his stuff out. That is much better most TMAers will ever do. He left the Wing Tsun class because he wanted to try some of the techniques out in a sparring situation, and the head instructor said no; so now he's coming over to MMA as a student.

I am going to guess those are 45's but they look damn think for 45's, i sure hope they are not hundreds.

Did just the velcro come off when you lifted? you could always tape it shut

I thought about that, but I'd rather have the adjustable one at home and leave the other one at the school for use there.

I should still see what i can lift with the harness i don't think i am near maxing yet but my neck was tiring because i basically did a reverse drop set.
