Finnegan's Wake

Yo Finn I just bought Infinite Intensity and was thinking about something. Am I screwed if I don't have a punching bag or is it important to have one?

First off: Punching bags are cheap as shit. Go to www.combatsports.com or to your local Dick's Sporting Goods (after checking Craigslist, of course) for a cheap punching bag. Seriously, this is one piece of equipment that you will really, really miss if have ever had one.
Combat Sports International has 170 lbs heavybags for 130 bucks. That's insanely cheap...

On the other hand, you can do shadowboxing for now.
But seriously, if you can hang a heavybag, do it. It'll give you the best bang for the buck you've ever spent as far as conditioning, skill training, and in some cases (shouldering) strength training goes.
I really, really suggest checking craigslist for at least two weeks before you buy a new one though. Heavy bags/ stands go on sale all the time on there. ebay too.

Problem is that I don't really have a place to put it for the most part. I need to talk to my mom and see what I could do in the basement but it's so fucking cramped down there already.

How's your Thai Bag treating you, Finn?

Know anything about the water/foam filled ones such as this one?

I had been looking at that one, too, and much cheaper than I thought a water Thai bag would be. We have a water heavy bag at our gym as well as a regular one. While the impact when hitting the water bag is nicer/gentler, we still use the regular one extensively. Probably because of the previous statement. The water bag also doesn't move around nearly as much or swing wildly when hitting hard, so that's a plus.

I wonder what they mean by "eliminates the damaging effects of intense heavy bag workouts." To me, what better way of conditioning your legs for when you kick someone's thigh or shin?

Yeah, the fact that it wouldn't move around as much is a HUGE plus, but I agree with you about conditioning your legs with a normal bag.

Other benefits with the water bag is that it is cheap for being 200 lbs, and I'd imagine it doesn't weigh all that much when it's not filled, so shipping should be reasonable.

Agreed, and you can simply let out the water when you want to take it elsewhere.

For our regular Thai bag, we got one that was really long and then set it touching the ground. It doesn't move nearly as much as a Thai bag that's simply suspended, either, so that's a workaround if you want to save some cash.

Of course a variety of toys is always nice. So many decisions...

Its doing good. Its just about right as far as the filling goes. Not too hard, not to soft. Its taken everything I've thrown at it so far.
I don't have a lot of experience w/ water bags. Sounds like they'd be good for people who want to do the conditioning/ keep up on skill work but have injured wrists/ hands.

Fenn: Your other option if you are really limited on space is a wall mounted hook/ uppercut bag. For just conditioning work, it would be fine.

I'm going to try to look in to it tomorrow. I think I can fit it somewhere since I could take it down if I wasn't using it, I never thought about that actually until before. Which is better for, the normal or the water bags? I'm thinking the water bag personally, any advantages/disadvantages to either?

how is banana bag different from heavy bag? it's only for kicking? I have seen those longer ones and I believe that's what they are called...anywho just curious.

how far are u from 600 sledge swings on the tire in 10 min? that would be a crazy feat...

I'm at 552 right now. 600 would be literally one swing a second. I could probably get that with an 8 lbs hammer, but I'll work up to it with the 10.

Finn, which one would you suggest, the regular heavy bag or the Thai bag? Also a water bag or normal one?

I love my Thai bag. I'd go with it. As far as the water/ normal, I don't really know, as I've never used a water bag for an extended amount of time. It wouldn't work for me since the bag would freeze in the Dungeon, and I'd be punching a giant block of ice.

The "Finnegan is pissed he can't do sprints so he does progressive complexes instead" complex:

135 lbs barbell used throughout: 3 minute rest between complexes.
Clean/ Push Press x 12
BOR/ Clean? Push Press x 10
Burpee/ BOR/ Clean/ Push Press x 8
Burpee/ BOR/ Clean/ Push Press/ Front Squat x 6

Sandbag Shouldering:
75 lbs x 5
150 x 5
150 x 5
200 x 5

Squat:
225 x 3
315 x 3
365 x 3
405 x 3, + 2 rep PR

Zercher Squat:
225 x 5
315 x 5
405 x 5

Bench Press:
225 x 8
255 x 3
275 x 3
295 x 1
295 x 1
295 x 1
205 x 12

Core Work:
Roll outs x 10, 3 sets
v ups x 12, 3 sets
3 second crunch x 10, 3 sets

Impressions:
Not bad tonight. The complex was nice. I thought about stringing together a huge progressing complex for one set (clean/pushpress/bor/clean/pushpress/burpess/clean/push press/burpee/clean/push press/front squat x 1) but then I realized that I still had everything else yet to do tonight.
Squats are coming along. Depth is still parallel. ATG isn't something I see happening for me without some major stretching. I think the back squats will help my Zerchers quite a bit.
Bench was good tonight. We'll see how fast I can get back to doing 300 x 5 and 315 x 1. I'm geussing a month or two.
Kept core work light since the heavy lifts were really texing as is.

Intervals:

Tire Pull:
100lbs tire x 30 foot rope, 3 minutes ( I would row it to me, jog to the length of the rope, and then it row it again, repeat). Approx 10w/ 5r

Tabata Tire Sprint:
100 lbs tire tied to my waist x 20w/10 r, 4 minutes of Hell

Backward Running Tire Rows:
I would run backwards w/ the full length of rope (about 25 feet) and the tire in tow, dropping the rope every so often to give it slack, x 3 minutes/ death

Bagwork:
Round 1: Tabata Heavybag Punches, 20 w/ 10 r, 3 minutes

Round 2: 1-2-slip 1-2-1-2 rapid fire, reset, 3 minutes

Round 3: Advancing Jab, Circling/ Advancing (ranging), 3 minutes

Round 4: DE Bag, 1's, 1-2's, advancing 1's (focus on head movement) 3 minutes

Round 5: DE Bag: 1-1's, 1-2-1-2's, head movement again, 3 minutes

Impressions:
FUCK! The tire/rope works nicely. I have an idea on how to turn it into a weight sled as well. I'm going to drill another hole (it already has a drainage hole drilled) and slide a standard barbell through it so I can mount weights onto it.

Only you, Finn

Well, I'm being serious, though. On the heavier sets of Zerchers, I tend to slump forward a bit. The back squats will strengthen the necessary muscles to keep my form solid, and thus hit 495 before too long.

haha. So true Alan.

You know you're manly.....when you're doing squats to improve your zercher deadlifts/squats. LOL...

your conditioning workouts are awesome.

If you get a chance ...get a beer keg...fill it halfway with water or sand....then do 50 cleans and presses in 20 minutes...or something like that....will bring new meaning to conditioning. also great for shouldering and such.

I've been thinking about doing some keg work for awhile. I need to look around the local liquor stores for one.
