Finnegan's Wake

I agree. "Gates of Fire" would have been a better story, but I feel that "300" was probably the better choice to make into a movie (for the studios, that is).
I wouldn't be suprised if someone doesn't pick it up in a few more years. The story is just too good to pass up.

I've yet to see a movie that was better than the book.

13th Warrior was better than "Eaters of the Dead".
By the way, I finished Heart of Darkness. Damn good read. They made a movie out of it with John Malkovitch as Kurtz. It should be interesting.

I've been preoccupied with fatty's contraption. I haven't finished the book yet.

There will be another installment of "This old weight room" on Tuesday. That's when I'll reveal the work of art that I built for Mr. Wilhelm.

Impressions:
My legs were out of it today from the weekend, so I decided to go with upper body instead of squats tonight. The only thing that really suprised me was the dumbell snatches. 75 just flew upward easily. Sandbag work has helped this, I'm guessing. 100 lbs at the end of the workout was pretty good too.
Chain works really well for the dips. It bites in a bit, but I'm okay with that. I could have gotten more on the anvil dips, maybe 5, but that wasn't my goal this evening.
I've still got a lot left, so I may go out and work on punching technique later.

and what direction would that be?

The main thing is that I would have included more character development with flashbacks and shit. This would have made the movie a shit-ton longer and more expensive, but it would have had more depth.

Also, I would have used more of the fighting tactics the Spartans used: they pushed their shields against the back of the person in front of them...this wasn't showed in the movie, so it looked like just the first line was holding back the ensuing horde of Persians.

I'll just have to read the book again and quit my bitching. :icon_chee

Umm... yes. You're not?.

A big, bald, powerlifter/mma trainee who forges metal weapons with his bare hands? whats there to be scared of?

"Hearts of Darkness" was awesome. Any Hemingway fans out there?

I'm working on becoming Santiago from "Old Man and the Sea."

Hemingway is a complete badass. Ideal blend of being strong in mind and body. Probably the only guy who could talk about drinking mojitos and make it seem manly

.

Really? I liked the book more. Don't get me wrong the movie was pretty good, but the book had waaaaaay more character development.

The ending of the book was total crap in my opinion.
Spoilers: highlight to read:
The last battle scene in the book was horrible. It basically said "Yeah, and big cool battle happened. It was so intense I can't even describe it." What the hell is that about? That ruined it for me.

The book did fine for what what Crichton intended: a made up, first-person account of real events that would grow into the Beowulf legend.

The movie turned a pretty dry read into a heck of a movie. Probably the highest badass-to-total-cast ratio of any movie I know of.

Hell-bent vikings FTW. "Hurry to meet Death before your place is taken." :icon_twis

Speaking of Beowulf, anyone seen the posters hanging up at your local movie theaters? I don't know who's in it, but I hope they do it justice.

We have to start another thread titled: Books to Read Before You Die.

I know I did this one ages ago, but I don't want to dig it up. Who's up for this?

So you guys like Harry Potter?

*ducks anvil thrown by Finnegan*

But seriously have any of you guys read The Stranger by Camus?

Never heard of that one, Mickey.

My reading list is in my log. Somewhere around page 5 or 6. I need to update it though.

Beowulf at IMDB

Apparently, it's entirely computer graphics. It's also apparently going to comprise both the Grendel and dragon stories, which strikes me as difficult to do in a movie of reasonable length, but perhaps a great deal easier if you don't have to worry about making your leading man look both 20-something and 50+ in the same movie.

We shall see, I suppose.

I saw the movie Beowulf and Grendel and I have to say that it was pretty sweet. It didn't have Grendel's mom in it though (or did it?!)...all I remember was some Banshee-looking troll came into town and fucked up a lot of people.

The Beowulf and Grendel movie was pretty good. I really liked King Hrothgar in that one.
And yes, I believe that was supposed to be Grendel's mother.
