You really dont need optimal combos as Zangief until like 1900 MR. You're just swinging because his offense is fairly linear and his defense is really bad now. He's still a good character but no PP into back throw in the corner and jump cancel SPD is gone so you just gotta play like an idiot. Once you get that down you can work on higher level shit.

i need to get comfortable hitting the DR as well.

don't worry about the optimal jump in route. His best jump in most times it j.mk xx cr mp xx lariat or mix up with SPD. You're not at the level where everything needs to be optimized, youre at the level where you need to execute basic game plans

Once you get the most basic part of the game plan down you'll be comfortable and add bits and pieces to the game. You don't need everything at once.
