Some of the new character designs for SF6 do seem like an improvement on the franchise recently to me. The test I tend to use is can you imagine what a character will look like from a brief decription? Kimberly I think you can but someone like Manon or JP less so.
SF1 really is a bit of a strange game for me, you'd think from its rep relative to SF1 that it was more your standard "martial arts fighter" from the 80's without a lot of the concepts that went on to define fighting games. Actually though it does have pretty much all the core ideas, different power punches and kicks, high/low mixups, blocking, jump ins, fireball and uppercut supers, etc just fails to turn them into a decent game.
I think even though its a beat em up its actually Final Fight which heralded the future of fighting games in terms of having rock solid mechanics and quality presentation, SF2 actually looks and feels more like Final FIght even if the actual crossovers(besides the bonus stages) didnt crop up until the Alpha games.
