Fighter of the year is a 4 man race between

"Holland isn't fighter of 2020 cuz he lost in 2018!"

<Neil01>
Wouldn't it more be a result of 3 of his wins coming against what if memory serves were unranked opponents? Still if he goes out and beats Hermannson he's had a hell of a yeah but it's not close should Fig defend his title again.

my criteria typically for this is that you didn't lose for the year, have a top win and fought atleast 3 times.

Khazmat has a few other unique achievements that make him a standout, 3 first round finishes, across 2 weight classes, the quickest fight turn around EVER, and if he wins against edwards, he'll have gone from "not signed" to "signed, 4-0 ufc record with a top 5 win" which is A LOT in just 1 year.

Well, yes. Sort of.
Chimaev started with a win over a dude who one fight later was released by UFC.
Next, 10 days later, he took a fight with a dude who was on his first UFC fight and since then is 0-2.
And then he took a fight with a dude who is 2-5 in his last 7 fights.
Basically, he disposed of three unkonwn, third-tier cans.

Now, it seems that he will take a fight with Edwards, who is #3. Let's see. That´s a BIG jump.

It is a big jump and I want it to be known that don't condone that match making, however the fight has been made and you can degrade his competition as rightfully as you please but the reality is that if they were low tier competition he certainly made them look that way. If he does the same to Edwards, it'll prove it didnt matter who it was

Oh yeah, Fig's the front runner for sure. Just mocking that the guy is disqualifying Holland on obviously faulty criteria

1. Kevin Holland:

Currently at 4 wins 3 finishes this year. if he beats Jack Hermanson that makes it 5, with a win against a top 5 fighter. absolutely meteoric rise. in my opinion, a impressive win over Joker jack makes him a pretty clear fighter of the year choice.

2. Khamzat Chimaev

He obviously needs no introduction, very impressive and dominant fighter. Has won 3 fights this year, all in the first round, across multiple weight classes without absorbing any damage. much like holland, had a massive break out year, that is ending with a shot against a top 5 fighter.

3. Deiveson Figueiredo

After notching his 3rd straight finish this year at ufc 255, rumor has it that deiveson is looking for a quick turn around at ufc 256 to defend the belt again, if successful that will leave him at 4-0 for the year, with 3 finishes against top guys all in title fights.

4. Brandon Moreno

looking at his third fight this year, will have won two top 10 fights and a belt should he win against Deiveson Figueiredo, earning a place in this discussion

So we're a month out who takes Fighter of the year this year? any other front runners I've missed?
Khamzat beat Phillips in the 2nd round btw

hermanson is a top fighter aswell, he'll have more wins than khazmat.

I give these awards based on merit, not on hype. As of right now, Holland has more merit.
People forget Holland had a pretty underwhelming performance against Darren Stewart. He was even yelling “COME ON KEVIN” while he was GnPing him

The winner of Figueirdo versus Moreno is fighter of the year, I thought we settled this already?

If Figueiredo defends his belt at UFC256 one fucking month after defending it at UFC255, he would lace 4 wins all on the title fights, and he is the fighter of the year by several nautical miles.

And if he doesn't then Moreno has two top wins followed by a win over a great champion, so it'd be him anyway.

The Chimaev love is getting way beyond cringe.
Anyone else want to see him go on a 3 fight losing streak just so his idiot fanboys stop making threads?
What was a devastating introduction to the ufc is being badly undermined by the unnecessary hype.
I’m gonna love it when he gets a title to annoy you haters even more

the 125 fig has beaten weaklings too, kevin holland has a better case than khamzat but kevin struggled against Gerald and khamzat finished him in 17 secs.
I think Fig’s dominance puts him over the top. Especially after Saturday and assuming he torches Moreno in December, it’d be hard to argue otherwise. Khamzat is just way too green. Regardless of how skilled he is or how he’s won he’s had too few UFC fights and they’ve been against nobodies

Yeah but that's one of his 4 performances winning a theoritical 5 fights in a year is a major deal I can't think of a ufc fighter that has done it off my of the top of my head

we don't know how things will play out, a bogus split decision or something could change everyones framing, the fight falling out due to a failed weight cut (short notice fight) ect. It's a race, and yeah figgy is far ahead in first, but he can trip, so can moreno.

It's a race. It says so in the thread, but you don't call the race over until the fighters pass the finish line, so figgy is in first, Monero is in 4th but can make a huge come from behind win.

No way is the Swedish dude a contender.

Magny won 5 fights in a year in 2014.
Nice find. looking at who he beat though, I'd say holland would be much more impressive with the hermanson win.

Oh he's definitely a contender if he beats Edwards make no mistake publications will want to give him the award im sure of it.

If figuerdo loses I could see plenty of publications giving it to khamzat. It wouldn't suprise or upset me particulary. I know the metric for these things subjective mostly, with a lot of unwritten rules like "it has to be a champion" but that's what makes this topic nuanced. to some people fighter of the year is the person who made the biggest splash, was dicussed the most online, had the best fights, had the most wins, or became a new champion. A criteria I think to keep, for the sake of maintaining a relatively short list, is you can't have a loss that year. but fighters have won the award while losing that year (robbie lawler, Conor McGregor)

Stylistically he had nothing for kamaru who broke his jaws and nobody wants to see that again him getting his mouth broken again and especially not that soon
I'm going to call bs he had plenty for usman. That fight was crazy close and could have gone to colby had he finished that round strong instead of getting finished lol. Just look at the cards man it was basically dead even going into the 5th. Which despite a broken jaw I thought colby was eeking out until that first exchange that lead to the end.

Chris Leben fought and won 2 UFC fights in 2 weeks. Put some respect on his name please.

edit* your right Chimaev wins that by a couple days.

2020 is the Khamzat Chimaev year and not even close..

Funny enough he was nominated for another award today the swedish ''Athlete of the year''
definitely Figgy over Khamzat.. Finished Joe B twice within 2 rounds and another top 3 finish in Perez. Still the Moreno fight to go.
