Separately Sunday, another law enforcement official said FBI investigators in the Weiner sexting probe knew for weeks about the existence of the emails potentially related to the probe of Clinton’s server. A third law enforcement official also said the FBI was aware for a period of time about the emails before Comey was briefed, but wasn’t more specific.

Warrant was issued only yesterday. Took a public announcement to force the DOJ hand.

I disagree as to second part. Comey had to articulate his findings that there was nothing to prosecute because of the nature of the person being investigated. Similarly, he has to articulate it here as well. IF he doesn't articulate it, they find something worth prosecuting and it comes out after she's won then the narrative would be that he suppressed the new information to benefit her candidacy. Full disclosure is the responsible way, imo, to handle the new information. And I say information because they've been clear that they don't even know if they have new emails, just information about the existence of emails on a new device.

He didn't have to opine about her judgment initially. That's totally beyond the scope of what he does. Present the facts, and others can offer their views on that. The GOP spun it is unprecedented, as a hit on Clinton, but Clinton isn't the first person to have exercised poor judgment in a way that doesn't violate laws. The precedent broken there was on the part of the FBI director interjecting his extra-legal opinions. Likewise, with this, he didn't have to go against the recommendations of the DOJ. People praising his integrity were noting that he would not let politics interfere with the actual investigation, but that's entirely separate from his media communications.

That's not good for Hillary at all. That sounds like they are slowly stepping away from the situation. It could just be that they don't want to say anything and criticize him. The CTer in me though can see this as them slowly moving away.

I don't think that's accurate. The President has a an obligation to uphold the neutrality of the FBI. That means he has to back the institutions of the government over the party itself.

Most of these accusations and conjectures only make sense when someone starts with the assumption that the institutions are biased to begin with. Then they have to make up stories to support the idea of bias. When you start with the reality that the institutions are neutral, 99.9% of the stories become obviously flawed.

Comey commented on not prosecuting because it was relevant and true. He commented on the new investigation because it's relevant and true. Obama backs the FBI's neutrality because that's his responsibility as the head of the Executive branch which includes the FBI. Don't let these people put you into a tinfoil hat.

He could have properly informed the public if he actually has information, or he could actually have acted. Not doing either of those, but publicly announcing the continuation of the investigation isn't "smart" or required for any investigation. It's just trying to influence the election and/or cover his arse.

How about all of America saying Hillary and the FBI were in cahoots? Come On you can't be fucking serious if you don't see worse ramifications. They reopen the investigation before the election, tell no one, and then end up indicting her. People would go crazy. At least now Americans would have no one to blame but themselves.
