After dodging questions sent to his office about his brother's role for more than a week, Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday tried to brush off Chicago Inc. at a media event on the West Side. Asked if his brother had discussed Chicago with Trump, the mayor sarcastically shot back, “Why don't you call my brother and see if he'll take your phone call?”
Asked by another reporter if his brother's meeting with the president-elect had come up at the Emanuel family Thanksgiving, he quipped, “You know what came up — not you!” and split.
Why are the mayor and his brother (who, alas, did not immediately return our calls) so reluctant to discuss Ari Emanuel's latest dealings with Trump?
While the backdoor access to the Trump White House might be a nice card to hold — and the mayor's brother would be well-placed to do Trump favors, such as, for example, line up talent to perform at Trump's inauguration — the optics of Ari Emanuel remaining pals with Trump aren't great for the mayor in a city that went overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton.
The relationship also has the potential to create awkward conflicts of interest for the mayor if Ari Emanuel continues to make money with Trump, who has been reluctant to distance himself from his own business empire since winning the presidency.
The pair's past deals are no secret. In addition to acting as Trump's agent, Ari Emanuel's WME-IMG agency last year purchased the Miss Universe pageant from Trump after Trump was fired by NBC for making derogatory comments about Mexicans.
And Trump in June told the Hollywood Reporter that Ari Emanuel was “a very good friend of mine” who had offered to make a film for Trump for the Republican National Convention. “He calls me a lot,” Trump said at the time. “I call him a lot, and we talk. He's very political. Even though he's not political, he's political. He gets it.”
Trump has also had kind words for Rahm Emanuel, telling Rush Limbaugh in 2011 that “I like Rahm, I've always liked him as a person, and more importantly, Ari, his brother, is my agent. ... I'm very loyal to people, and that supersedes, frankly, party lines.”
The mayor earlier this month refused to return a $50,000 campaign donation that Trump gave him in 2010, saying he had spoken out against Trump and didn't want to put money back in his pocket during the presidential election season.
As long as his brother remains in Trump's circle, it's an issue that's unlikely to go away.

BTW I think your whole country is utterly corrupt by design. The fact that presidential campaigns are run on private donations means that your presidents are for sale by definition. That shit is illegal in pretty much all western democracies.
