Fat BJJ guys

Anyone near The Gracie Barra In Blue Ridge GA? That's where a buddy goes and is the closest legit school to me.
Not from there but I think you should start with some cardio your exercise and stay monitoring what you eat. Do not run as it will destroy your knees. Do something that won't impact your knees. Go to those classes as well and do what you can. That's all the advice I'm going give you.

Old post, but I hate this attitude of hating on people who skip warm ups for whatever reason.

They're WARM UPS. They're supposed to only help, to warm you up. If your instructor makes you exhausted with it, that's shit. If someone skips warm up, that should only be a negative for him, and nothing to be pissy about. If your warm ups are some kind of an instructor ego boost, then people should skip them.

Yet it's only this one guy who is incapable of doing the warm ups and then functioning afterwards. Most BJJ warm ups aren't that strenuous. A little running, a little calisthenics, and some stretching.
But the instructor turns a blind eye. Because he's 80 lbs overweight?

Your post made no sense. So we should not skip warm ups because they benefit us, but if they suck we should skip them?
I'm not sure what was so hard to understand about it. Other people managed just fine. Do you not know what the word "either" means?

Guard is easy to pass, they don't do guard. Just rely on being able to muscle you onto your back so he never have to play guard.

It's like Judo without having to do take downs. lol

Can't believe this thread was bumped. I literally got in from class and came to put a thread up about 'Ultra Heavy BJJ'

I'm 6ft 5", 270lbs. Alongside BJJ i'm a powerlifter - 705lbs deadlift, 620lbs squat and 355lbs bench. I also run around 25km a week over 3 runs. My 10km time is 44:13. I class myself as athletic, not fat (although i could easily drop 15lbs).

Anyway... i'm a white belt and find myself dominating every other white belt in my class 90% of rolls. I'm fit, i'm strong and i'm heavy - I'm the heaviest in my class by about 60lbs.

It's fun getting into side control and chilling out then exploding for a submission however I worry that it is detrimental to my game. I'm looking to compete in December however i've never rolled with anyone even close to my bodyweight. Blue belts are good as my weight is somewhat negated by their skill and creativity however when they get me in side control or mount it's not really uncomfortable for me, I crave a 270/80/90 guy to test myself against before I compete. I'm concerned I rock up to the comp full of false confidence from beating lighter guys.

Further to that and echoing an earlier poster - I rolled with a 3 stripe, 180lb white belt earlier this week. First roll I passed his guard to side control then stepped over to mount, took an arm and americana'd him. He got up and said something like "ah yeah nice one but you just used strength there, no technique, you should do it like this... then proceeded to tell me how he'd of done it... Next roll, I was a bit pissed off and wanted to shut him up - I submitted him with an omoplata from guard an he still told me I was using my strength.

It's alot of guys 'go to' line when they are butthurt at being a skinny manlet. I work hard on my flexability and cardio and technique and often people just assume i'm a brute with no skill.

Nice to see so many big dudes here!

Looks like I won't be going to the Gracie Barra Academy for a while. I must lose some weight and fit in their A5 GI before I'm aloud to start there. I should be good before this time next year. Hopefully.
Huh? They won't let you train cuz you're fat?

I used to train with a 290-300 lb power lifter, maybe 15% body fat, just a fucking huge guy. It sucked, but he toughened me up, and when you get a tap you feel like a fucking giant killer. More recently, an even bigger BLACK BELT (we're talking NFL offensive lineman size and strength) wore a blue belt (I didn't know he was BB), smashed me like a petulant child, then trolled me saying I was trying to use too much strength and not enough technique.

So, basically, fuck fat guys that are good at bjj.

Im 205 5'10, just got back into BJJ, and Im very cautious to not use strength at all. Im genuinely afraid of hurting the smaller guys. I am trying to learn to use my weight to be "heavy" in side control to wear guys out, big guys have to use their weight as its a physical attribute like speed and flexability of smaller guys.

I find the smaller guys go full balls on me though, I don't get upset, I just try to defend and use technique, I figure once Im able to combine strength and technique I will be a fucking monster

I rolled with a fat guy once. I used his weight against him and I traingled his wrist

Just when I was starting to ease up on my dislike of Barra...
Got anywhere else you could try?

The Gracie Barra guy did you a favor. He told you the truth. You don't need martial arts. The biggest threat to your safety is at the dinner table. Diet and exercise for a year. That is your number one priority. It is literally a matter of life and death for you.

Not being mean. I am just telling you a truth that will save your life.

So the favor was putting an emphasis on diet and exercise but not being willing to help with either even for pay?

I think the Barra place did him a favor by making it clear that it wasn't the place for him.

Lol. Diet and Exercise......But no bjj So I need to exercise without exercising.....I understand the Diet part. I understand the Dinner table being key. That's a duh. But F your slogan is Jiu-Jitsu is for Everyone. And I'm unable to join. Then bjj isn't for everyone.

If a 55yr old 350lb Joey Diaz can do bjj. Then I know I can. I'm not the average fatty. But. Oh well. At least I know Barra will never receive a dollar from me.

Don't blame BJJ for your complete lack of discipline and will power. You got yourself obese. You have no one to blame but you. Now, I am being mean. I am a BJJ black belt. I am 54 years old, 5'9" and 165 lbs. I have done this for 24 years. You think you understand when you are clueless. BJJ is not an efficient way to lose weight. I look at our lineup and see it every time I go to class. Size is rewarded in BJJ. You can do BJJ and not lose a pound.

You need cardio, weights, and a strict diet so you can even get to the starting line. Walking to start, then bike or swimming. If you don't, you will die.

Not everyone gets to be an astronaut when they grow up. Especially people that have had no respect for their bodies. Man up and stop crying like a fat bitch. Your biggest enemy is Carl's Jr.

What is the most you have ever weighed in your life?

I was told that in order to train at the academy. I needed to wear an official Gracie Barra Gi. Which I understand. My grandmother is a old school seems tress and I was planning on buying two gis and making it fit ( done the same thing during Varsity Football ). I was told no. That I needed to wait until I could fit in an official A5 GB GI and by then I would be healthy enough to safely train for myself and the other guys. Which I totally understand. But talk about a kick to the gut and took the wind right out of my sails. Oh well. One day I'll get there.

If I were you I'd find another school if at all possible.
