Don't blame BJJ for your complete lack of discipline and will power. You got yourself obese. You have no one to blame but you. Now, I am being mean. I am a BJJ black belt. I am 54 years old, 5'9" and 165 lbs. I have done this for 24 years. You think you understand when you are clueless. BJJ is not an efficient way to lose weight. I look at our lineup and see it every time I go to class. Size is rewarded in BJJ. You can do BJJ and not lose a pound.
You need cardio, weights, and a strict diet so you can even get to the starting line. Walking to start, then bike or swimming. If you don't, you will die.
Not everyone gets to be an astronaut when they grow up. Especially people that have had no respect for their bodies. Man up and stop crying like a fat bitch. Your biggest enemy is Carl's Jr.
i mostly agree with you that if you can't fit into the biggest gi, you have a serious issue. carrying that much weight literally means you are going to die far too soon.
however, what is this bullshit about bjj not being good for losing weight? for a 20+ year veteran, that's an ignorant statement. hard training is
draining. i have never in my life done anything even remotely as physically demanding as grappling. no running, weight lifting, cardio exercises, none of that shit will exhaust you quite like wrestling / bjj. you can train lazily, sure. there are plenty of schools who cater to people who aren't interested in hard sparring. but regular gyms will have intense live rolls, and if you're there with a good group of competitive guys, you can get the exercise of your life.
i have seen plenty of people lose weight through bjj. most people i know who train hard, got in tremendous shape, just by doing bjj. i'm on the other side of the spectrum, i was really small when i started out and through the years i've put on a lot of muscle. no weights, just regular training. there really is no difference between pushing around weights and pushing around live bodies, except the latter is much more difficult when they're fighting back. and it's obviously much more fun to do bjj than to lift weights.
agreed on the diet, though. if you're morbidly obese, working out is good, but working out and eating cleanly is far better.
