Not an expert, so someone with expertise might weigh in. This is the place where you report the leak. No mention of forged documents.

Its not logical that you would have to report a forgery. The whole system could be paralysed by people posting forged leaks and crippling the place with paperwork.

The Sunday Times would not have reported if they thought it was a forgery. That could be libellous. RTE would have let the Times know (off the record) if it was a forgery. The Times obviously have a source in the Data Protection Commission and that is how they confirmed the doc.

RTE are in Glomar response mode, they can't appear to give stuff like this credence publicly. Otherwise there will be a 'leak' every time a rumour comes out and their response will confirm or deny it.

If someone was circulating a piece of paper saying that it was from me that could cost me a lot of money in legal fees and fines etc etc I would want to report it to someone and have it on record that it wasn't me that did it, but my point is that the law is not straight forward, its very complex and can also change regularly. Without the knowledge of the law, and working through to a logical conclusion does not necessarily work if you are unfamiliar with the law

When you search the website there is no mention of forgery, other than a link to Europol. I assume if you are going to report it to someone for the purpose of covering yourself it would be to the police.

This line from the times article would contradict the notion that RTE were reporting a forgery

You could be right, but I think it is unlikely. As you say, we wont know unless someone with actual expertise weighs in with a view.

Irish DPP Claire Loftus has been in her position for 8 years. A 2017 report states that her office received 13,666 prosecution files in 2017, 66% of the cases had a decision made on them within 4 weeks at a 94% overall conviction rate maintained.

So maybe hear about a decision in a month or so whether to progress with a case or not.
(assuming developments like the accused dropping complaint don't happen in meantime)
