The problem is what people are considering "Disinformation." Some would say listing a scientific fact is disinformation. Like a person's gender is determined by chromosomes. Or a common dust mask is not going to filter out the coronovirus or any virus.

That is the problem. Those that control speech, generally just want to control people.

Agreed... even flat earth is really disinformation but do we want it shut down so noone can discuss it? It's a slippery slope when you go down that road. Especially when it comes to govt censoring.

Shutting it down has never worked. Ignoring it seems like the best idea but the way social media algorithms work makes that nigh-on impossible for the average person under 40. People naturally filter out large amounts of information they take in every day and are highly stimulated by anything their brain tells them is a warning or a threat. Social media algorithms exploit that by filling their suggested content with whatever gets under their skin. They call it doomscolling for a reason.

I'm pretty confident that Russian propaganda distributed in this manner had a great deal to do with Trump's win in the election and Musk's platform in particular facilitated that in an obviously deliberate way.

Having said all that, I don't know what the solution is other than to make teaching kids about this kind of bullshit a priority before and after they start using the internet. Without drastic action against the likes of TiikTok, Instagram, X, etc, to change how their algorithms work--and their business models which is not gonna happen if it hasn't already--I think it's too late for the majority of adults who are regular users of these platforms. Seems to me we're bound to have an entire generation of people that fall for one bullshit thing after another, but we can at least educate the kids.
 
Community notes is the best type of system for now. The only thing that would be better is open source AI fact checking.

I do not know why anyone can be against this move by Zuckerberg, unless you're just being contrarian because he's not in your side of the political aisle.

Yea I think that is the biggest point. The gov getting to control speech more can be bad, since they suck at most things. Then it will be abused and so on.

How do you deal with bad information or disinformation ? with better ideas being debated and defeating those things. I think Rogan said that before and it stuck with me.

It makes sense that they're not though. Ultimately Facebook is a data-mining platform. You getting scammed or not doesn't affect their objective. People who think it's weird that they're not doing anything about it are attributing to Meta good intentions that don't actually exist.
