I played the game and I don't think it gets any better if you take those cutscenes out. It's not like they had a Shakespearesque story and then reverted to grade school level writing only when the gender stuff came up.

People talk about choice, there is very little if any branching choice that meaningful in the game period. They just give the appearance of it with factions. I wouldn't assume that the lack of choice is to shoehorn you down a path for political reasons. They just had a story they wanted to tell and they didn't bother putting a lot of effort into alternative paths. That's a common critique of modern RPGs. People said the same thing about CP2077 and Starfield. I think AAA game budgets are so large and development timelines is so long that devs are limited to focusing on the canonical story.

The writing is bad. The lack of meaningful choices is bad. These things make the game bad and it's independent of the gender stuff. You can take the gender stuff out and it's not suddenly some great game. And that's why it failed.

It's down to the game being developed as a live service, only to be changed to being a traditional AAA singleplayer RPG in the home stretch. That's why the tone and story is the way it is.

I didnt play Last of US, I hear it was exactly like the show. If the ratings went down, probably because Joel died, like in the video game. One of the best eps in the first season was about those gay dudes that found each other in the apocalypse.

I dont even remember any sex in House of the Dragons yet alone women kissing, but regardless the show was extremely entertaining.
