Exposing the Grift: Go Woke Go Broke

Meh a few Youtube grifters maybe. The vast majority liked the character.
I mean back when he was introduced in the comics, it was definitely mixed reception. They had to kill Peter Parker to insert him into the storyline, so right off the bat it pissed plenty of fans off. Back then YouTube was just people uploading videos of their cats, the grifters were limited to cable news and radio. Guys like Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck bitched about it.

Lots of people had a problem with that character swap. Back then they called it PC not "woke". People said it was a publicity stunt, said character was inspired by Obama, etc. Others were happy to "finally have representation". It was basically the same as now but there was no online social discourse to get people who would normally not give a shit about comic books all riled up, youtube was just starting out so nothing to platform a cottage industry talking about it.
There was a huge backlash.

There were hashtags #notMySpiderMan and all sorts of bullshit.

The term woke may not have fully manifested but it was unquestionably under the same umbrella of intolerance and simple racism.

But the general overriding perception by the general public is that they aren't woke.

The "general public" doesn't care about "woke". Its a regressive contruct clung to by a very specific segment of the population.

"woke" complaints have been issued by all the the top films on that list. BARBIE was the WOKEST film in 2023 and though you personally think otherwise, matched many of the criteria you claim to define woke.
Woman power, lgbq, race swapping etc. The anti-wokety wokes were worked up by the film. Disney is regularly labeled as WOKE by so-called conservative leaders ie. DeSantos , trump and popularly embraced grifters.

Labeling something "woke' is an inherently subjective definition. It's like saying chocolate ice cream is better than vanilla. You can't say that's "wrong" because it's completely subjective.

We agree on that.

More than anything its a bullshit term that will go away and evolve into something else to express the same objection to inclusion or whatever.

Is this the level of dishonest debate we are at? Morales was published in 2011. We trying to pretend people weren't using social media and YouTube then

Vlogging was barely a thing people knew or cared about, and live streaming was in its very early infancy. No one was talking about wokeness on YouTube you little spaz. What are you even arguing here? That Morales wasn't a controversial character in 2011? You sound like some of these grifters who obviously weren't even following comics back then. Nerdrotic himself who owned a comic book store back in the day has said multiple times it was as seen as a failed publicity stunt and everyone hated the character.

You "massive spaz"

because chuds look at any female lead role and say the film is woke feminism, in the same way they point to any woman or black person in a job of any sort and call it a DEI hire?

Its not hard to work out?
It would be, if either of those were actually true.

Admittedly I haven't seen this yet

But given "William" and "Gary" are the far left weather vane on what normal people call woke or not, will be interesting to observe their mental gymnastics here

- race-swapped lead male character: ✅
- independent & maternal lead female character: ✅
- gender-swapped ultra popular/iconic antagonist: ✅
- woke?: ❌

make it make sense

My favourite example is the Fiftieth anniversary release of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon

There was a backlash because they went "WOKE" cause the rainbow on the cover....

That hit my funny bone hard lol

My grandma uses youtube in 2025. She didn't know of anything on the internet in 2011. Believe it or not life was quite different in 2011...

Believe it or not your n=1 example of your fucking grandma has sod all to do with anything when it comes to pop culture.

Wow, what an utterly ridiculous argument.

I'm embarrassed for you for making it.

the skill it takes to dilute “there was a lack of widespread platforming for online personalities to cultivate an anti-woke sociocultural perspective because the discourse & its peddlers hadn’t yet carved out their corner of the internet” into “people didn’t have social media or use youtube in 2011” is like sticking the landing on a double-back salto tucked w/ a 1080° triple-twist in the mental gymnastics olympics

Ok. If you don't think tech and social media have proliferated since 2012 when smart phones "took off" as per a Google search:

"Smartphones significantly took off in popularity around 2012, with sales overtaking feature phones in the US during that period. While the first smartphones appeared earlier, it was the increased affordability, larger screens, and the rise of app stores in the early 2010s that led to widespread adoption. "

and that you're embarrassed that someone would claim that social media is more prevalent today than 6-8 years after its introduction.. Just LOL. Excellent point there.

....

ANYWAYS, how did the company that made the game with the afro samurai who could fall in love with a trans character do after they released their game? Oh, its stock went from 13.50 to 9.50 and they were partially bought by a Chinese company?

Sounds like a success.

Posting my thoughts from the Mayberry thread:

8.5/10

Way better than I thought it was gonna be. It felt like the first Avengers movie. If you are interested in the competition, this is a way more cohesive and less fluffy than Superman. I feared it being woke, like the dudes in the movie acting like idiots for the girl or a gay guy to save the day - I never picked up on anything of that sort (except maybe for one scene but that would be nitpicking).

I'm a big fan of the Poker Face series, so the actress showing up from that show was a plus for me. I feel pretty optimistic on the Avengers: Doomsday/Secret Wars storyline after seeing this.

There are some odd scenes in the movies like the F4 acting like join Presidents/PM's of the entire world that they're in but whatever.

You've invented some weird quotes there that nobody said buddy.

Not like you to be disingenuous to defend to the death your extreme political ideology
