I'd guess that being a global phenomenon toy for girls, the fact the movie was very 'girl power' played right into the hands of the target audience - girls and their mothers. I'd imagine if they made a movie of something like G.I Joe, that had the same messaging, it would bomb as the target audience would be boys and their fathers.

I'd imagine if they made a movie of something like G.I Joe, that had the same messaging, it would bomb as the target audience would be boys and their fathers.
