News ESPN offered Helwani a pay cut during contract negotiations

A man got to make his money. How much he values himself doesn't really matter - it's all about how much he can generate or get paided.

He will get paid more - that's a perfect decision.

What an entitled weasel this guy is turning down 500k to be a journalist. He makes much more than the majority of MMA fighters do.

Call him a weasel (which he is, he's also the best journalist
Love DC & Helwania and Ariel & The Bay Guy. Wonder if Dana has anything to do with this lol

Doesn't matter what the occupation is, if you're the best as something and you're helping your employer generated $$$, you should get paid your worth.
Ariel has always generated good numbers and is widely/unanimously considered to be the best MMA journalist.

Everytime I kind of forget what kind of guy Helwani is I start watching one or two interviews and he is BACK. Last interview, cant remember the name, he desperately tried to get a coach talk bad about a fighter and then changed it just as much to make it offensive. A real bitch move.

Sorry to say but as dumb Luke Thomas is, Helwani is as slimy and backstabbing. mma media is really at a sad state.

If someone is willing to pay you more, why stay and take a pay cut?
I'm sure Helwani would have taken the pay cut if there weren't any other options.

Fuck it, chase the bag

Id be blown away if Fox paid him more. No way in hell TSN would. He's not good enough for NBC, CBS and by extension not good enough for NHL, MLB, NFL or NBA.

Showtime?

I don't think he made a very good decision. We'll see

Lmfao Ariel thinking he's worth more than 500k a year. Dude is extremely lucky to have gotten this far, with a face made for radio and zero fucking personality

oh look, it's exactly what I said earlier today.

I think that Ariel didn't want to leave ESPN and due to cuts (they layed off a lot of staff last year) they offered him less than what he had been earning.

My guess is that Action Network has a powerful backer behind it and they offered Ariel the same money he had at ESPN for a year or two until it goes bankrupt.

I highly suspect Dana had something to do with this. It wasn't that long ago that Dana called Helwani a "douche" (I hate to say, but I agree with Dana on this one) and just a little later, Helwani decides to leave ESPN.

I don't think Dana is THE reason Helwani decided to bounce, but I do believe that he was part of the equation.

I actually like Luke Thomas and don't think he's dumb at all. He seems like a down to earth college friend that you used to lift with and occasionally surprise you with his intellect. His podcast with Rogan was pretty damn entertaining

I like that he curses and doesn't seem super professional.

Sometimes staying current is more important. Hopefully, he makes the right moves.
I don't know if he wants to just focus on the podcasting since that is so profitable these days..

But leaving the MMA Hub in ESPN is NOT good for his MMA Rep as a reporter.. But we will see where he lands?
