Of course it does, and with traditional media if he was innocent he'd have had options for legal redress.
There are specific laws which cover what the media are allowed to publish specifically for the reason of ensuring fair trials.
The internet and social media is something the current legislation is ill equipped to deal with.
No, their opinions do not matter to the law. You have the option for a trial by judge or jury. Even with the later they are not merely social media followers with ill informed opinions. They are part of the legal court process privy to evidence and counter evidence from both the prosecution and defense.
