Tech End of Windows 10 Support - Do I really need a new computer?

sometimes the windows update itself wrecks the computer. one day a few years ago, my computer just slowed to a crawl, with persistent 100% disk usage. When I rolled back the last auto windows update, everything went back to normal, took me like 2 weeks to figure it out.

very shortly after, I installed linux. If you don't want to commit to linux, you can dual boot Windows and Linux, setup is more straightforward than it sounds.

I suspect they'll give you free patches for a year if you agree to use their cloud backup so they can backdoor access everyone's files.

One of those computer maker support assistants was directly responsible for crippling my computer by using max CPU and max disk and basically making me unable to turn off the computer after I was done or risk something becoming unstable next time I turn it on, so had to leave it on for several hours until it finished and resource use was back to low single digits %. This was daily.

I rarely see Windows Updates including driver updates each month. Very rare and when it does, it's like something to do with monitor.

I vaguely remember after Microsoft ended support for XP, at some point there was some big vulnerability they patched, but I don't assume they will continue doing that and XP I think was still widely used by businesses and government at the time. I think Apple patched iOS for older devices they stopped supporting at least a handful of times.
We use XP sometimes and therefore are keeping some old comps...because diagnostic software for certain tools is for XP and if to switch to more modern, next license should be purchased...and for such stuff anyway dg soft will be approx the same...just xxxxx € bill on top for fun.
However it isn't stuff connected to internet so I don't gave f about libs etc ...bla bla bla.

Win 10 still today is usable, Linux is tricky sometimes if in depth and you should learn a lot, if more than user ...

I still have to upgrade my gaming pc from win10 to 11. It's eligible for the free upgrade but I'm terrified it's going to break everything so I'm putting it off until the last minute.

Upgraded quite awhile back, have not noticed a thing

Nothing broke for me, it's pretty smooth at this point.

While I'm sure you guys are right and everything will go smoothly, the back of my brain is telling me it's a trap!

Even within a month or so ago I'm seeing articles about how some update in Windows 11 is broken and you have to rollback the update. Lame.

I suggest to copy all on different hardware for reserve in case IF... and prepare for fun that might happen in some cases...after upgrade..

I a bit hate Win 11. Something is better and a lot of stuff for me is worse...

When was the last time there was a major update like this?

I'm not talking about Win 10 to Win 11 update, but the Win 11 updates after you already had Win 11. There were at least two articles/instances where the article I saw said something in Windows 11 broke after monthly update and something about endless loop.

That's every version of Windows. That happened with 10. There are always bad rollouts that wreak havoc for use of some particular feature that is popular with a lot of people. It causes a backlash, because people are forced to roll back, and then they don't take an update again until the subsequent update fixes whatever was botched in the patch.

That's just part of life with taking rolling updates. You're worried about your computer because you won't have rolling updates, but then you're simultaneously worried about the pitfalls of rolling updates.

You'll be fine, either way. Stop stressing over this.

Yeah, that's what I'm asking. Windows updates can be a crapshoot, but conversely people will blame Windows for everything, even when it's not their fault. For example, all the recent griping about Windows wrecking SSDs. It wasn't, but a lot of folks already made up their mind prematurely.

You can stop auto updates with Group Policy Editor in 10, not sure if they screwed with that with 11, but I think I was still able to do that with it. I basically set up and maintain my brother's new laptop with 11 and wanted nothing to do with it after that and every time I check to see if it's gotten better it really hasn't. You can also use wushowhide to hide updates you don't want to download like automatic gpu driver updates or certain Windows updates both of which are routine auto update issues.

Windows 10 was a great os , if we compare with what we had back then with windows me and 2000 1758053143902.jpeg

It was one of the must unstable OS.

At least we had this Beck song pre-installed on it :

Well... 30 seconds of it at least lmao

My family's first Dell Dimension (256mb ram and a celeron cpu lmao) had ME

That thing was CONSTANTLY crashing

It also was on my firest computer, i don't know any single person that had ME and said it was fine on their system.

Security updates are the only real concern. I wouldn't do anything "sensitive" on an unsupported OS. That means you shouldn't be logging into ANY accounts that you aren't okay with being hacked.
