sometimes the windows update itself wrecks the computer. one day a few years ago, my computer just slowed to a crawl, with persistent 100% disk usage. When I rolled back the last auto windows update, everything went back to normal, took me like 2 weeks to figure it out.
very shortly after, I installed linux. If you don't want to commit to linux, you can dual boot Windows and Linux, setup is more straightforward than it sounds.
