No Spoilers Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

So I played for about four hours tonight and just explored. Didn’t do anymore legacy dungeons but found all the map fragments and probably something like 20+ sites of grace and got my Scadu tree blessing level up to 9.

This dlc is HUGE. This feels like Altus Plateau, Mount Gelmir and Mountaintop of the Giants put together. “It’s about the size of Limgrave” - Miyazaki, YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT!

Laughed aloud at this.

My first night into Land of Shadow had me cross paths with the guy re Blackgaol Knight. He sh*t all over me. Wherever you take the fight, he has a response. And his riposte is a OHKO for my char. Felt class to eventually beat though; his moveset is deceptively small so not hard to learn but the first impression is a pants-crapper.

Love his caped armor but too heavy. Haven't checked if we can alter it + stats in transmog menu from grace.

As incredible as the world design is in this game, I must say I think this DLC just went too far with the difficulty for me. I thought Malenia was already excessive and not enjoyable. But this has become just too hectic, lacking the elegance and methodical dance that carried the game until DS3, and reached its peak in Sekiro. The base game already had some questionable balancing issues, but this time, they really went too far in my opinion. It's fine to make optional bosses a challenge, like Midir, and Malenia. But here, it's not the case.

Too many bosses have insane combos that fill the screen with effects, in which they move insanely fast, and the camera turns into a nightmare. Yes, you can figure out eventually how to beat anything, obviously, there's people that beat Mario Kaizo.

SPOILER:
But I think this is where the game has effectively become too alienating, though people seem to be loving it. In particular, Rellana and Mesmer, I think, are simply excessive early DLC bosses. I know Rellana is optional, but Messmer is just too hard. You often can't tell the animation of the attack he is loading in phase 1 because the fire covers him. He has an air combo that ends in an AOE that requires essentially luck to avoid, since the arena is not particularly large, and neither rolling nor jumping nor running nor blocking are feasible. And the second phase is impossible to follow. I know I can use a mimic tear, summon, and so on, but it shouldn't be necessary.

I am sorry to say, but despite the high praise I think From just has fallen on a trap of trying to outdo themselves with difficulty, and the result is every boss kills you in a few hits, have insanely long combos, speed, resist stagger, input read, and are tanky with insane HP pools. Malenia was at least easy to stagger and the arena was very large to give you room to find openings to heal and recoup. And Rellana and Messmer are simply bad design.

Ok, then I'm good. But...aw shit. I restarted the game. I'm in ng+ currently and havent gotten to that part again. I did do it the 1st time. Does it count?
No you have to beat them both in your current playthrough (so ng+) to unlock the portal to the dlc behind Mohg's bonfire.

I was like you and had done all that in ng but then took my character into ng+ and made a beeline for Radagon to get the second ending. So I had to go beat Radahn and Mohg again.

Go get more scadus

Are you following a guide or just wandering around? I've only found 3 scadu fragments.

Go get more scadus

I've been roaming around trying to find enough. I'm at +9, but Messmer is not manageable with any consistency because of what I said. I've gotten a bit bored going in circles trying to find these things.

Ah +9 should be plenty. What weapon are you using? Do you use any buffs?

milady +25. I tried using bleed buff but i can't get reliably enough hits in to get the status working. I can get to phase 2 sometimes by staggering him repeatedly, but once snakes are out the camera is too hectic.

Golden vow and flame grant me strength are the typical buffs people use. Also 60 vigor and defensive talismans.

I used a guide merely to get a hint on how to find 2 of the 5 map fragments, as the map fragments are visible on your map before you pick them up, but in this case I couldn’t figure out how to get their locations for the map fragment in the most northwestern direction or the one in the most easterly direction.

Scadu fragments are just all over the place. Like there are way more than I would expected to come across. Haven’t used a guide to find any of them, though I read there are a total of 42 to be found.

No.

You zone into the dlc from the defeated Mohg's boss room.

Mohg Temple Mohg, not sewer Mohg.

Go talk to Varre and get the portal to Mohg land.

...god dammit.

Finally took out that mother fucker Messmer this morning. Phase 2 is such cheap shit. Trying to read his snake form attacks is just a crap shoot.

*Edit*
I did invest some mats and leveled up the Impaler Spear and it's pretty beastly. On par with Mohgs spear without the bleed, but the full strong attack throws the spear pretty far with a nice explosion and AoE fire damage. Nice for baiting out mobs.

How much more difficult does NG+ make the DLC? Is it worth starting another game?

Think I've finally cleared out Belurat including the two locked doors and the sewer gate. Back to pontiff I guess.

Guess I’ll try a DEX build.

I got to get this off my chest. These games were designed to be difficult. We had for same complaints when people faced off against Margit and Radahn. Then the latter was nerfed into oblivion despite the fact that there were plenty of summons in that fight. I think the real issue here is everyone is trying to keep up with the Jonses Just maybe this wasn’t intended to be beaten in a weekend. Stay off social media and guides and just work on it at your own pace. There’s more resources in this game than any previous From Software game. Hell use mimic tear or other ashes if you’re tired of getting your ass handed to you. There’s also a huge map to explore. Just last night found a tunnel leading to a small island. So yeah major issue imo is people rushing this and getting mad that a boss might derail their plan to beat it within a few days. Not much coming out in July so it’s not like there’s a need to go at such a relentless pace. I plan on exploring and just doing the bosses when I’m ready. Anyway said I wouldn’t be posting here but I just kind of wanted to address this since I’m seeing the complaints everywhere. Personally still feel Sekiro was harder because it forced you to get good with such limited options

Finally found Hippo, exploring the castle now. Those hitboxes on his attacks are ridiculous. I’ve been finding myself way too impatient and greedy because I was able to coast through the main game on my recent play through. Legitimately have to buckle down and play more thoughtfully.
