Edwards tools Islam

Leon would beat him. He is very big at WW and just fought a bunch of wrestlers and showed massive imptovements in his wrestling defense. On the other hand, Islam stopped looking so dominant struggling against Volk and Poirier, either of them not being that big or athletic.

"not being that big or athletic."

Both are athletic and Poirier is big for the weight

Usman and Islam are very different fighters

Usman is nothing special in the grappling department. He just holds guys when he gets them down, zero sub threat and minimal damage.

Islam at least is a very serious sub threat when he gets you down. I feel like Leon would get backed up to the cage a lot, which is where Islam always has the most success in getting the fight down.

not to mention "Islam struggling with Volk and Dustin" when he finished both.

Leon ended his last title fight on his back getting bludgeoned but no mention of that 😆

Leon's last 4 training camps have been training for forward pressure wrestlers - Usman x2, Colby, Belal. That's 4 training camps in a row training to defend takedowns, hold the centre of the cage, and keep the fight at kicking range.

He just beat Usman (3rd fight), and Colby by somewhat clear decisions by defending takedowns, getting back up to his feet, holding centre and keeping the fight at kicking range. I assume he will do the same to Belal.

If Leon fought Islam next, that's 5 training camps in a row preparing a very similar game-plan vs a wrestler.

This idea that if Islam gets a takedown he's just going to sub Leon easily or hold him down for entire rounds seems unlikely to me. Volk survived full 5 rounds with Islam, Poirier almost survived 5 rounds - both of them had success in defending takedowns, and getting back to the feet when they were taken down, and avoiding submissions when they were taken down. People talk like the fight is over as soon as Islam gets you down, but it's not the case.

Leon has never lost by submission.

You should generally always favour the fighter from the higher weight class in these match ups unless there's a giant skill gap in favour of the smaller man, or a massive stylistic weakness on the part of the bigger man. Considering Leon has been beating the welterweight grapplers comfortably recently, is on a 12 fight win streak, and the bigger man, I'd surprised that so many people think the Islam is the favourite.

If it does end up primarily a striking match I'd favour Leon to edge out a decision.

Leon gets underrated because he's a bit boring.

Did you just use pure logic to explain why Islame isnt the best in the world (od course always begind Beeps)!?!?

The audacity….

Edwards is way overrated.

Islam's submission grappling game is much better than Usman's.

Its going to be very difficult for Islam to take down Leon. Especially in light of todays performance against Dustin, who has bang average take down D.

Not really related to a potential Edwards fight but I think Islam actually did feel like he had something to prove with his boxing. His kicks, which in my opinion are the best part of his striking game, were basically nonexistent. Maybe someone smarter than me can explain why that might be though.

Islam too scared. Islam wants to fight 145'ers or guys 1 fight away from the retirement home.

He's so scared that he's begging for that fight.

Damn right he ain't. Islam only wants guys smaller than him. At least Usman and Khaz actually fight up in weight class, though both aren't that good anymore.

When Islam will move to WW what excuse will resort to ? <mma4>

Islam vs. Edwards could be this generation's Silva vs. GSP. If both stay on their winning streaks, this fight would be monumental. Ideally, it should be built up more and happen in late 2025.

Islam should defend his LW belt twice more, starting with Tsarukyan, while Oliveira vs. Gamrot could determine the next contender. Edwards has his own challenges, starting with Belal, then probably facing the winner of Garry vs. MVP. McGregor could also snag a title shot in either division with a strong showing at UFC 303.

A potential 17-fight streak for Islam vs. a 16-fight streak for Edwards, with Islam's grappling and Edwards' striking, would be epic.

In an ideal world:

-Edwards vs Belal at UFC 304
-Makhachev vs Tsarukyan at UFC 307 Abu Dhabi
-Edwards vs Garry/MVP at UFC 308 in MSG or UFC 309
-Makhachev vs Oliveira/Gamrot February 2025
-Edwards vs Rakhmanov April/May 2025
-Makhachev vs Topuria/Gaethje July 2025
-Edwards vs Makhachev December 2025

It's a very interesting fight.

Leon is longer, rangey, and a better striker both offensively and defensively.

He has prepared relentlessly for wrestlers in all of his last 4 camps and as a result has probably the best counter wrestling game we've seen from a British fighter, or a fighter in general.

He is most susceptible to being taken down in open range, in the center of the cage. Conversely Islam struggles to take his opponents down in open space.

Islam is a master of getting the takedowns against the fence. Leon's entire anti wrestling game is also based around being up against the cage. His wrist control and hand fighting a game on the fence is as good as I've seen. Not to mention his vast array of get ups.

I think Leon pretty much has the style to completely shut Islam down. I would be picking him to win should they fight.

I'm not smarter than you, but Southpaw vs. Southpaw takes away the easy body and high kick set ups.

It is related to the Edward's fight because Edwards is a southpaw too

Perhaps Dustin being a southpaw played into that?
