EBI 7

Seems odd that they want payment up front from the likes of Metamoris and EBI whilst getting little from the IBJJF comps. In terms of prestige - the guys winning EBI are getting to be reasonably big names now.

It's starting to feel a bit like some of them are ducking the sub only format.

Because they would do ebi and met for MONEY. They do ibjjf for prestige and to prove themselves as the best in the world in a gi. The mundials is the most prestigious gi event. ADCC is the most prestigious no gi event and has a payout.

Guys who did super good in ebi got handled in ADCC from what I remember.

I love EBI probably as much as any sport/promotion out there right now.

Can I order and give my money directly to them or do I have to give it to the UFC?

Soto has fight coming up doesn't he

I don't entirely disagree but 2 things are getting missed here I think.

1. IBJJF may nit pay but they do have a shit load of prestige that often has some dollar value potential later on if someone wants to open a school or do seminar tours, private lessons, or things like that.

2. EBI has a ruleset that can easily allow for people way worse than you to beat you. Moreso than any other format. Does that equal ducking? Depends on how you define ducking. But let me explain. If you're Rafa Mendes in EBI 7, no one is taking your back or passing your guard. Not ever. No disrespect to anyone in the brackets. It's very deep and filled with some of the best active athletes in grappling and even some of the best of all time.

But none of them are going to pass Rafa or take his back in a ruleset without that OT format. And it's hard to sub someone that just wants to not be subbed. So someone could disengage with Rafa for 10 mins (not that long if your only goal is to stall and not get subbed, especially nogi) and then in OT they get to start on Rafa's back or with a fully locked armbar position. Two spots they'd never be able to get to based on their own skill versus his.

So if someone like Rafa would rather not risk that, with a massive marketing image of eing this untouchable beast, and then the possibility of getting little to no money, even if they win the event, when he already is an incredibly successful businessman and 20k isn't much money? I can see why it's hard to pin those caliber grapplers down for EBI.

Agreed, but the issue is who gets the mismatches, since pay is exclusively tied to the ability to submit in regulation. Due to the event still being new, there's inevitably going to be 3-4 easy money opponents in the first round. In the last event, Gordon Ryan faced an amateur qualifier in the 1st round, and a middling pro in the second, while Yuri faced Evandro Nunes and Garry Tonon. Yuri made $0 despite fighting like a lion and winning both matches. Thus, seeding is more than just a matter of pride, it could literally mean getting paid or not, which merits even more scrutiny considering that the promoter/matchmaker/ref is also the coach of several of the competitors (and close friend in the case of Denny).

Completely true.

It's not a question of being fixed, but gaining a slight upper hand.

You make good points. What I do like about EBI is that it promotes a high energy output, similar to college wrestling. At the end of the day, people's athleticism and more important, their defense under intense pressure is sharpened in the forged in the flames of the sudden-death type rounds.

Expecting Cooper or Cummings to take it. Ash Williams is a great fighter from Wales, great to see him on a card like this.

Where has Cooper been the last couple years. He was a big active name awhile back, then things went silent on him for a bit.

Its the opposite actually. The talent level of IBJJF is much higher than EBI. IBJJF BB Gi is still considered the BJJ "WORLD CHAMP" and ADCC champ is the No-Gi equivalent. You can argue that IBJJF isn't as exciting, but not that the competitors arent as good.

Hopefully eveyone can stop giving Bravo shit for giving his guys easy matchups now. Davila is the real challenge for Cummings on his side while the 10th P guys have to deal with Cooper, Domingos and each other.

Eddie gets to the finals easily. The right side of the bracket is brutal though.

If you really want to support EBI then you should definitely order it on fight pass. Fight Pass' decision about how much resources to spend promoting future EBI events almost certainly depends on a measurable increase in subscribers and traffic to their site.

more subscribers & web traffic to fight pass for EBI = more prize money for future events = better quality competition

I like EBI but sometimes the brackets makes me wonder why the top guys has so good competition but the 10th planet guys dont. Now regarding this EBI eddie might take this again unless he finds a opponent with great guard passing that might make him unable to get the legs. the 10th planet guys has the same weakness: pass their guard and they became frustrated.
