mmmmmm.... After last ebi, this seems to go back to normal. Eddie is going to win it all again, Bill cooper is a nice addition, it will be pretty exiting because of some mismatches...

Sounds about right. Joe Soto did really well last time though. So maybe.. Oh, and Kim Terra did well too, before the freak rib injury.

Don't sleep on domingos, dude was real exciting last time.

Huge differences in levels.Hopefully they do the seeding publicly and random.

That guy is legit as they come. Wouldn't be surprised if he wins this thing. Cummins might catch him, but it's certainly not guaranteed.

This is doubly important since you only get paid if you submit in regulation. Draw an easy guy and you get paid, get tough opponents and you're screwed even if you win the match. Denny Prokopos got paired with a 40+ year-old late replacement from a local gym in the last EBI he did (while Eddie Bravo coached him from the sidelines).

If you look at the seedings, the main 10thP guys always get a mismatch and on opposite brackets of the killer(s). I'm convinced that some of these guys are invited just to lose.
Here is an example:
Bracket-1.jpg

Tonen,Martinez, and Rani are highly accomplished and arguably in the top 5 of that tournament. Tonnen and Martinez probably have the longest resumes as far as grappling but drew each other first. I'm an avid grappling fan and couldn't even recognize most of the names on Denny's side.Prior to the tournament, the only name I even recognized was Kim Terra who he wouldn't have to meet until the Semi Finals.Tonen on the other hand had Steven martinez first who is an absolute beast, then potentially Rani.

Then this one:

Tonen,Martinez,Cocco,and Cummings on same side.
On Richie Martinez side other than Mafra, none of those guys were really known then. Hinger is a beast but wasn't really known when the bracketting was done. Going off grappling resumes, Tonen,Cocco,Martinez and Cummings have the best resumes in that tournament and all on same side of the bracket while Richie's side is filled with local guys few have even heard of.

Those mis matches are a big reason why EBI is so exciting and fun. I've been saying that since day 1. All high level gets boring real fast.

Agreed, but the issue is who gets the mismatches, since pay is exclusively tied to the ability to submit in regulation. Due to the event still being new, there's inevitably going to be 3-4 easy money opponents in the first round. In the last event, Gordon Ryan faced an amateur qualifier in the 1st round, and a middling pro in the second, while Yuri faced Evandro Nunes and Garry Tonon. Yuri made $0 despite fighting like a lion and winning both matches. Thus, seeding is more than just a matter of pride, it could literally mean getting paid or not, which merits even more scrutiny considering that the promoter/matchmaker/ref is also the coach of several of the competitors (and close friend in the case of Denny).

I expect Domingos and Kim Terra to do well, but Eddie Cummings may my still win it all. I won't sleep on Joe Soto though. Bill the Grill is always fun to watch no matter what. Hopefully he does really well. And may the Jiu-Jitsu gods bestow a blessing on all of us during this event.

They should consider adding some bonuses like fight of the night, submission of the night, fastest sub, etc. It would be a good way to get more people paid and encourage the type of grappling they want.

This is a great idea.

Bravo said that Cummings and Tonon were on the same side of the bracket, because he wouldn't tolerate any predetermined outcomes in the finals. I think EBI is the best and the most exciting grappling tournament today. That being said, I too believe there's some easier fights given to Eddies favorites in the first round.

Domingos and Cummings would be a great final match, hopefully Domingos can prepare well for this one, as far as I know he should have an MMA fight soon before or after.

I wonder why the big names on the IBJJF circuit stay away from this format?
