The Dagestani wrestling style is genius because it recognizes that the "wall" of the cage is an extra pressure point that can be used. There's a reason why Dagestani fighters run 'through' their opponents to push them up against the wall.

The entire combat system is built upon it.

Anyone who's trained in BJJ and ended up against the wall while rolling will tell you that it makes the fight feel VERY VERY different.

This is also the reason why I say that Dagestanis would not fare NEARLY as well in a ring with ropes. If you dropped Islam into a Pride fight 20 years ago, you wouldn't see the same outcomes.

I’m going to disagree with Makhachev though, I think he would be much much better in the ring, his take downs are entirely different he incorporates a lot of trips, throws, sweeps, arm and leg drag TD’s, most of his takedowns occur mid ring or away from the cage, he barely throws elbows and relies on punches and submissions which in PrideFC, I believe he would run through almost everyone at LW. Khabib on the other hand would struggle bad.

I know this is an MMA forum, but you shouldn't really talk if you don't actually watch other combat sports. China currently has two K-1 champions, Liu Ce and Ouyang Feng, a top-5 ranked boxer Zhilei Zhang, not to mention Zhang Weili, the current UFC Straweight champ.

Yeah China has invested in boxing for the last two decades or so and still they yield very little talent, but they do definitely yield some professionally and have gotten some Olympic medals. K-1 has largely been a joke as far as Kickboxing goes for years now so again, that's not saying much. And I just disregard women's MMA, its not really a sport, we are talking a pathetically shallow talent pool.

You think I don't watch other combat sports because my opinion triggered you? What a joke. Ive followed tons and competed in tons for a while now, even Sumo I really enjoy. If China put the effort into MMA they did in lifting, I think in 10-20 years they could be a global powerhouse like US, Russia and Brazil.

Some countries has it, no matter what. They just have it. Think about Uruguay: they are just 3mln in their country but they have had some of the best soccer player of history and they won 2 word cups.

It isn't just mma. Look at usyk, bivol, beterbiev and lomachenko more recently. These dudes have a mentality that is tougher than the rest. It's like it's in their dna. The States and Brazil are still great fighting countries. Also the uk/Ireland and new Zealand/Australia, but these eastern European dudes are just built different. I expect many more champions in combat sports from this region in the near future

Khabib fought all his fights in the ring prior to UFC. He did OK!

lol this thread. There are actually a lot of people in those areas. Russia would mostly win the Olympics when they were the USSR just because they had so many more people (if you include all of the people in those counties that separated). The rest of the world has just caught up in sports to the US. You can see it in a lot of different places (like the NBA, international stars are the thing). It isn't really that they are fundamentally different. Russians are trending in MMA similar to the way Brazilians have before; don't get caught up in recency bias.

Not to sound the wrong way, but Chinese are just not good at a lot of sports, and that's why they don't have more stars despite the large population. There was a massive search for a new Yoa Ming in China, and they were patently unable to find another basketball star despite the billion plus population. India could have some stars if they had more of a focus on sports.

Khabib lived in the mountains, if you go to a big city in Dagestan it's safe and good. Maybe Khabib has a rough background but 90% of those dagestanis are from the rural areas.
