Dragonlord's Most Anticipated Films of 2013

6. IRON MAN 3 [May 3, 2013]

Iron-Man-3-Helmet-Dragonlord.jpg

The first Iron Man is my personal favorite Marvel Studios film to date and that's why it was such a disappointment when Iron Man 2 failed to live up to expectations. But with Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) taking the directing reins for the third installment, the franchise looks to be on the right track. Described as a technological James Bond thriller, Iron Man 3 pits Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) against the ruthless terrorist, the Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley). When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. The storyline is loosely based on Warren Ellis’ Extremis series that focused on nanotechnology. The film also stars Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rebecca Hall, Jon Favreau, James Badge Dale, and Guy Pearce.

Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. 4. KICK-ASS 2 [June 28, 2013]

Kick-Ass-2-Set-2013-Dragonlord-1.jpg

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes. Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

[Insert cinturao pedobear joke] I'm too tired to think of one.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.” When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

2. MAN OF STEEL [June 14, 2013]

Man-of-Steel-0101-Dragonlord.jpg

Under the guidance of producer Christopher Nolan, director Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is what Superman fans around the world have been waiting for after Bryan Singer's disastrous Superman Returns. Supes will go up against General Zod, somebody that he can go toe-to-toe with. Gone are the stupid outdated homage to Richard Donner's version. Lex Luthor, whose last big screen incarnation was a pathetic man-whore/real estate developer, isn't even mentioned this time around. And judging from the awesome trailers, Man of Steel has the right balance of drama and action.

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

1. PACIFIC RIM [July 12, 2013]

Pacific-Rim-Gipsy-Dragonlord.jpg

We finally reach my number one most anticipated film of 2013. It was a tight battle between Man of Steel and Pacific Rim but the latter eventually prevailed due to the fact that we rarely get to see an epic giant robots versus giant monsters spectacle on the big screen while superhero films have been pretty common for the past decade. Being a fan of the 1970's anime giant mecha shows such as Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Gaiking and Daimos and the 1995 series Neon Genesis Evangelion, I have been anxiously awaiting for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim since it got the greenlight. As Bob Gray said, "Citizen Kane better get used to being No. 2 after July 12."

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Honorable Mentions:

AFTER EARTH
No one expected much of M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi adventure but the recent trailer released won a lot of skeptics over. Starring Jaden Smith ad Will Smith, the film centers on a father and son who explore a planet that was evacuated by humans 1,000 years earlier. After Earth would have made it in my Top 25 if it weren't for the fact that I still have doubts on Shyamalan after he butchered the adaptation of one of the greatest animated series ever made - Avatar: The Last Airbender.

THE WORLD'S END
The third entry in the so-called “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy” that began with the zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead and continued with the action parody Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright's The World's End focuses on five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival. Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Paddy Considine, and Martin Freeman.

PAIN & GAIN
Anytime Dwayne Johnson is involved, that film immediately puts it in my radar. With a modest budget of $25 million (which is like 30 seconds of VFX for Transformers), director Michael Bay's Pain & Gain centers on a trio of bodybuilders in Florida who get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong. The film also stars Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Mackie, and Ed Harris.

THE HEAT
Wasn't really interested in this female cop buddy comedy but the first trailer won me over. Uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is paired with testy Boston cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthey) in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. The hitch: neither woman has ever had a partner -- or a friend for that matter. Directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids).

THE LAST STAND
The Last Stand will be Jee-won Kim's (I Saw the Devil, The Good, the Bad, the Weird) US feature film directorial debut. The leader (Rodrigo Santoro) of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his inexperienced staff.

SNOW PIERCER
Joon-ho Bong's (The Host, Memories of Murder, Mother) post-apocalyptic sci-fi film is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe. Starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. I'm a sucker for this type of sci-fi premise, hopefully it won't resort too much on shock value like The Divide.

VIRTUALLY HEROES
Two self-aware characters in a Call of Duty-style video game struggle with their screwy, frustrating existence. To find answers, one abandons his partner and mission, seeking to unravel the cheat codes of life. The story sounds like a lot of fun, sort of like a live-action version of Wreck-It Ralph.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
Director Martin Scorsese's crime drama tells the story about a New York stockbroker (Leonardo DiCaprio) who refuses to cooperate in a large securities fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street, corporate banking world and mob infiltration. Co-starring Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Favreau, Jon Bernthal.

I, FRANKENSTEIN
Based on Kevin Grevioux's graphic novel, "I, Frankenstein" is a modern-day tale on Frankenstein's creature, Adam, who has survived to present day due to a genetic quirk in his creation. Making his way to a dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Yvonne Strahovski (mine!!!), Bill Nighy, Miranda Otto, Socratis Otto, Jai Courtney, and Kevin Grevioux (who also co-created the Underworld franchise)

2013 is looking incredible for movies

I presume Dragon's lack of porn titles is due solely to the mandatory condom law they just put into effect?

I'm looking forward to ELysium as well. I was a huge fan of District 9. Definitely one of the more innovative Sci-fi movies in the past ten years.

Nice thread Dragonlordx.

Feels like Sci-fi movies are more popular (and grittier) than they've ever been, and that there has never been more emphasis on the "sci" part. Nice to see filmmaker start paying attention to design, details and plausibility. I like. Meanwhile the fantasy genre is starting to get really stale.

That Pacific Rim movie, though, looks really, really... crappy. Seriously. Sorry.

I think Pac Rim will disappoint. first hearing about Snow Piercer. interested in seeing Song Kang Ho (main cop in Memories of Murder) in an American movie.
