Movies Dragonlord's Fantasy Casting Vol. 17: CABLE (20th Century Fox Reads Sherdog)

5. Liev Schreiber

Name: Liev Schreiber

Age: 49 (born October 4, 1967)

Height: 6’3”

Credits: Ray Donovan, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Sum of All Fears, Salt

Remarks: Liev has all the qualifications to play Cable. The only downside is he already played Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (in which he was one of the few bright spots in the film) and it might be a bit confusing or distracting to some of the audience when he plays another character in the Fox movie universe. But I think he deserves another shot at comic book stardom as he would undoubtedly be great as Cable and the potential muddle that would ensue would be worth it.

4. Mel Gibson

Name: Mel Gibson Age: 61 (born January 3, 1956) Height: 5’10”

Credits: Lethal Weapon, Braveheart, The Road Warrior, Machete Kills, Edge of Darkness

Remarks: Mel has always been an expert at balancing between dramatic intensity and goofball comedy. Deadpool 2 would give him a chance to do both. Based on his last two action movies (The Expendables 3, Blood Father), Mel still looks great and spry for his age. And if he gets the part, it would complete his comeback story.

3. Jon Hamm

Name: Jon Hamm

Age: 46 (born March 10, 1971)

Height: 6’2”

Credits: Mad Men, Keeping Up With the Joneses, The Town, Million Dollar Arm

Remarks: Jon Hamm has always been my ideal Bruce Wayne actor and I think he’d be fantastic as Cable as well. Take a look at this, he already has the Cable look down perfectly. If you still doubt he can do action, wait ‘till you see him in Edgar Wright’s upcoming heist thriller Baby Driver.

Cable Grade: A

2. Josh Brolin

Name: Josh Brolin

Age: 49 (born February 12, 1968)

Height: 5’10”

Credits: Sicario, No Country for Old Men, Men in Black 3, Jonah Hex, Hail, Caesar!

Remarks: Josh has been my top pick for Cable since 2016. I knew that whoever they cast as Cable needs to be the straight man with a deadpan sense of humor opposite Deadpool’s craziness. If you've seen Men in Black 3, you know I’m right. It’s like you’re getting Tommy Lee Jones but 22 years younger.

During a recent interview, the Deadpool 2 writers stated they were looking for a Cable that is “intimidating, scary, a great foil opposite the lunacy. Someone with a great deadpan thing where they can react to someone who's being crazy. Someone who also has a spark of a sense of humor.” Boom! There it is. Josh fits the criteria to a tee.

The only drawback is Josh is heavily attached to Marvel Studios for the next few years playing the Mad Titan Thanos. In the very small chance he does get the role, at least there won’t be any confusion since he’s only doing motion capture work for Thanos (meaning nobody sees his actual face).

Cable Grade: A+

1. Eric Dane
Vr5XN1t.jpeg

Name: Eric Dane

Age: 44 (born November 9, 1972)

Height: 6’1”

Credits: The Last Ship, Grey’s Anatomy, X-Men: The Last Stand, Open Water 2: Adrift

Remarks: Not as famous as the rest of the actors listed but Eric Dane is my No. 1 pick to play Cable (with Josh Brolin for a very close second, could even be a tie).

In TNT’s fantastic action drama series The Last Ship, Eric plays bad-ass Navy Captain Tom Chandler which unintentionally also happens to be a terrific Cable rendition. Not only that, Eric is physically perfect for the role as well as having a commanding voice that fits with someone that can lead X-Force. At 44 years old, he can play Cable for the next 20 years if need be.

Most of the candidates here are very famous which is sometimes a disadvantage since some people can't distinguish the actor from the character with a lot of the criticisms stating the actor is just playing himself. Eric is not a household name which is an advantage as he can claim the Cable role all his own and start up with a clean slate with the public.

On a sidenote: If you want to watch a good action series, forget about those Marvel Netflix shows filled with dull and dragging moments, watch the criminally underrated The Last Ship instead where each episode is a complete package.

Cable Grade: A+

25. Keira Knightley
Keira-Knightley-Cable-Dragonlord.jpg

Name: Keira Knightley Age: 32 (born March 26, 1985) Height: 5'7"

Credits
: Pirates of the Caribbean films, Pride & Prejudice, Love Actually, Anna Karenina

Remarks: Mentioned as a joke during the Deadpool post-credits scene, Keira Knightley's name has been attached for the Cable role and that's why she's here. (Keira’s spot in here might be replaced by another actor in the future)

I like Eric Dane. I dont like any of your choices overe the age of 45 though.

Why go with a no name period? I am sure there are wannabe actors working in a restaurant in West Hollywood that can fit the bill of Cable.

The Last Ship is pretty good.

Something went wrong with the group notification. Resending it now.

Edit: Error. Sorry for the multiple duplicate posts.

Got all 3 tags.

Sadly, I bet they've already cast Cable. They just haven't announced who it is yet.

2. Josh Brolin

Name: Josh Brolin Age: 49 (born February 12, 1968) Height: 5’10”

Credits: Sicario, No Country for Old Men, Men in Black 3, Jonah Hex, Hail, Caesar!

The only drawback is Josh is heavily attached to Marvel Studios for the next few years playing the Mad Titan Thanos. So it’s extremely doubtful he’ll be starring in a Fox superhero production anytime soon. But in the very small chance he does get the role, at least there won’t be any confusion since he’s only doing motion capture work for Thanos (meaning nobody sees his actual face).

He would have been great

great great list

surprised jon hamm is that tall, but doubt he could fill out well for cable

live schrieber is an awesome choice, cant believe I didn't think of him, david harbor too

I think whoever plays him would have to be 6'2-6'3 to match Reynolds 6'2, and in the 40-50 range

some great choices earlier but just 10-20 years too old unfortunately

where's my credit for this choice!?!?!?

Probably true. Oh well.

I've been watching Jack Taylor on Netflix and I think Iain Glen could've pulled off Cable. 55, 6'1" can pull off the look and the character. Plus that future slang bullshit Cable was always spewing like "Flonq" would sound pretty badass in Irish Brogue.

Every episode of the first season of The Last Ship is like an excellent movie.

I like Eric Dane. I dont like any of your choices overe the age of 45 though.
Majority of the candidates are not my choices. Most of the names are from the media sites and fans. I only have two personal choices for Cable - Josh Brolin and Eric Dane.

Why go with a no name period? I am sure there are wannabe actors working in a restaurant in West Hollywood that can fit the bill of Cable.
As I stated, sometimes an actor is so well-known that his tics, mannerisms and personality is so common to the public, that it might be hard for the audience to differentiate the actor from the character. I hear a lot of people complaining that this actor is just playing himself and so on.

The Last Ship is pretty good.
Always great to see another fan of the underrated show.
