Chappie-EW-Hugh-Jackman-Dragonlord.jpg

Release Date: Mar. 6 (Wide Release)

Genre: Sci-Fi Comedy Drama

Director: Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium)

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er, Jose Pablo Cantillo

Synopsis: Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings - some good, some bad - and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there's one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

Rotten Tomatoes: 30% Approval Rating (36 out of 119 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: Chappie boasts more of the big ideas and visual panache that director Neill Blomkamp has become known for -- and, sadly, more of the narrative shortcomings.

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

Second-Best-Exotic-Marigold-Hotel-Dragonlord.jpg

Release Date: Mar. 6 (Limited Release)

Genre: Comedy Drama

Director: John Madden (Shakespeare in Love, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel)

Cast: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Richard Gere, Dev Patel, David Strathairn

Synopsis: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it's making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy - posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig).

Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie Smith), the keeper of everyone's secrets. As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding threaten to engulf them all, an unexpected way forward presents itself.

Rotten Tomatoes: 64% Approval Rating (78 out of 22 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about as original as its title -- but with a cast this talented and effortlessly charming, that hardly matters.

I can't be the only one thinking "Robo Cop" followed by "Number Johnny Five" follwed by "Wall-e" when watching the Chappie trailer.

No I think of them in an entirely different order.

Chappie was bad. Really, really bad.

District 9 was one of my favorite movies of all time. One thing I really loved about it was how it got the audience despise Vickus right from the very start. They make him an annoying, pencil pushing beaurocratic weasel who is wholly unlikable. But throughout the movie, Sharlto Copley and Niel Blompkamp were able to manipulate the audience into turning their feelings towards Vickus around completely. I went from despising him, to sympathizing with him, to pitying him, to outright cheering for him.

In Chappie, Blompkamp again used his skills to make me despise almost all of the Characters... but he never redeemed them. Die Antwood are as insufferable as their songs that litter the soundtrack. Hugh Jackman's character is paper thin. He might as well have had "I'm the antagonist because reasons" written on his fucking forehead and it would have been more subtle than the things he did in the film to make sure the audience would know he was the bad guy. Sigourney Weaver? Terrible. Patel? Forgettable. Copley actually did a great job as Chappie, but the end result was a character so annoying, I wanted his battery to run out.

3/10

Chappie was not that bad. Wasnt great but if you give that movie a 3/10 stars then you went in there with such high expectations, and they must of been shit on.

Chappie was pretty good. The score was awesome. Hanz pulled off another classic. I came out thinking that i want that soundtrack. The movie had some good action and if i had one complaint is that i wish the movie was more of a action movie. It was more of a drama/ comedy with a little bit of action. The movie is an updated short circuit with hints of robo cop thrown in.

The humor in the movie was awesome. THis can also lead to people not liking it since humor is different for everyone but me and my brother were laughing almost the entire time. Lines like "chappie... dont you want to be the #1 gangsta?" "dont laugh chappie is being cool" "Muthafuckin ninja" I was still quoting lines off this movie hours after i left the theater. Loved the way chappie imitated all the gangstas in the movie. "I got the bling blings. I got the blings"

Like i said before the action was lacking. WHen there was some it was very good but i think i would of changed this scene a little bit to make sure people werent bored
When they dropped chappie off and was beat up by the kids, i would of had chappie kill them. even on accident but make it cool. Also his escape from wolverine would of been more epic. You could of had chappie fight them and get caught. THen do something cool to escape. I know what the director was going for but it fell short in doing so

I will rate the movie a 7/10

Going to see Chappie today. Honestly thought that it would be way better received by critics. Should I wait until Tuesday so I don't worry too much about wasting my money?

Hugh Jackman's character is paper thin. He might as well have had "I'm the antagonist because reasons" written on his fucking forehead and it would have been more subtle than the things he did in the film to make sure the audience would know he was the bad guy. Sigourney Weaver? Terrible. Patel? Forgettable. Copley actually did a great job as Chappie, but the end result was a character so annoying, I wanted his battery to run out.

Damn, I was really excited about Chappie, I'm disappointed to hear that it's a pretty bad movie.

Ya, the theater I was in seemed to find those parts hilarious, but I didn't, I just found it annoying. I mean sure, I cracked a smile at the Chappie saying "fucker mother" the first time, but the "Ha, the robot talks funny" gag didn't have any staying power for me. It could have been because I really did feel for Chappie in those first moments, so watching him slowly get manipulated into a dumb wankster was kinda painful.

My main problems with the movie though were from specific scenes that didn't make sense, like

Dev Patel, "I finally created real genuine AI! This could be the biggest scientific breakthrough in human history!"
Sigourney Weaver, "Meh, no thanks, we make weapons, we have no use for such a technology."

WHAT? OK, this kind of technology could be sold to just about every government in the world, as well as private industries whether it be for weapons related purposes or not. You're gonna pass on your company being known as the company that finally created Artificial Intelligence? Really no money to be made there?

and the worst scene:

When Jackman threatens Patel with a gun, in his cubicle, with all his coworkers watching, and none of his coworkers try to diffuse the situation, call security, call the cops, tell the boss what's going on, nothing. They just sit back like, "Oh, my coworker is gonna blow the brains out of my other coworker, I better just stay out of this." Then Jackman even pulls the trigger, and it goes click, then he laughs and says something to the effect of, "Of course it's not loaded, why would I carry a loaded gun to my cubicle job?" Ummm, why would you carry a gun at all in a cubicle job, especially if you don't load it? He's supposed to be a soldier, when any soldier knows that carrying an unloaded gun is ridiculous because it could escalate any potential confrontation, without the ability to deal with that escalation.

And then this would only bother gun nuts like me, but

When "Ninja" is teaching chappie to shoot. He keeps telling him to "Aim" by turning the gun sideways, lifting it over his head and pointing downward to the target. Somehow, "aiming" like this, Ninja hits every single target. Doesn't miss once, despite not using his sights. Then when Chappie drops the gun, he complains that he damaged his expensive red dot sight... the sight that he wasn't even using because he was shooting his gun like a wankster retard. Then later when the big bad gangster guy comes to get his money, "Ninja" pulls out his yellow AR-15 to shoot him, and he can't hit shit, even though the guy is standing out in the open. So when he's shooting a handgun, he's a dead accurate marksman without even having to use sights, but when he's shooting a rifle? Can't hit a man sized target 25 yards away.

Then the ending. I won't even spoiler warning this one, I'll just come out and say it. It's a painfully literal use of Deus Ex Machina.

LOL its not a bad movie at all. Not even a little bit. Just not epic or on the level of district 9. He might never accomplish anything like that again. One thing i love is he does seem to take risks and make movies the way he wants. regardless of what people think there is no other movie out there like chappie.

a baby robot being raised by gangstas. hasnt been done

I understand your gripes.

I think if he would of shortened the drama to half a movie and the last half straight action he could of really reeled in the fans

i knew it would suck from the trailers, looks like a very annoying film

a baby robot being raised by gangstas. hasnt been done

Except for Short Circuit 2. Johnny 5 might not have been a baby, but it's the same premise.

The synopsis on IMDB for Short Circuit 2 is as follows:
.
Robot Johnny Five comes to the city and gets manipulated by criminals who want him for their own purposes.

Sound a little familiar?

I am now losing faith in this idiot getting his hands on the 'Alien' franchise.

a baby robot being raised by gangstas. hasnt been done

I'm sorry, but this premise just sounds annoying, juvenile and fucking stupid. Some shit that a 12 year old might think is awesome.

And based off a combination of reviews and trailers, I don't think any of what I typed above is far off.

Weekend Box Office:

CHAPPIE Soft $13.3 Million Debut; 'SNIPER' Breaks 2014 Record

Chappie-030715-Dragonlord.jpg

With moviegoers mostly staying away from Chappie and Unfinished Business, the first weekend of March wound up being the slowest one so far this year. On more positive notes, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opened to a solid $8.6 million, while American Sniper passed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

Box Office Report:

AMERICAN SNIPER Becomes Top Grossing U.S. Film of 2014

American-Sniper-030815-Dragonlord.jpg

American Sniper is the highest-grossing 2014 domestic release. The R-rated drama has made $337.2 million since debuting in a handful of theaters last December. That puts it ahead of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and its $336.8 million haul as the top film to debut last year. With a budget of $58.8 million, the biopic of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle represents a substantial return on Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s investment.

Globally, American Sniper won’t be able to match the $1.1 billion that Transformers: Age of Extinction pulled in, but it has been a robust performer, particularly given that films with patriotic subject matter don’t tend to travel well abroad. It has made more than $140 million in foreign markets. American Sniper easily outstrips director Clint Eastwood’s previous releases, giving the 84-year-old the biggest hit of his career. It’s also star Bradley Cooper’s highest-grossing domestic release.

American Sniper is an unlikely blockbuster — there are no fantastical elements, and the film deals with the unpopular Iraq War, something that has been box office poison for pictures like Rendition and In the Valley of Elah. It also marks the first time since 1998’s Saving Private Ryan that a realistic drama and a R-rated film has been the top domestic release.

The film had its detractors, with some critics decrying the picture for whitewashing the life story of Kyle and for lionizing sharpshooters. However, the film played well in both red and blue states, with audience members responding to the film’s depiction of Kyle as a dedicated serviceman and hero.

'American Sniper' Passes 'Hunger Games - Mockingjay' as Top Grossing 2014 Release

I'm also a bit concerned with Blomkamp at the helm for the new Alien movie. Hope he gets a good co-screenwriter and not just rehash the same themes from his last 3 films.
