Multiplat Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Next up on well duh gaming news: a long time progressive game developer continues to be progressive. The same people who put a butch lesbian and a flamboyant gay dude as companions into their last entry into the series now have included trans people. Culture warriors are as outraged as they were last time.
Is this a global brand? It was. What are the benefits? Kotor 1 did fine despite lesbian plot but trans inclusion will be a bridge to far for many markets, including maybe the US. maybe you can have like a gender switching robot if it is well written in a AAA game.
In which universe is encouraging man to become eunuchs progressive or leads to positive progress?

Yeah, i bet the people inside Bioware are constantly angry, explains a lot about the recent performance of the company.

Having seen so many awful clips, it's interesting the spread in the more complete reviews. From people that are focused on systems and don't care much about narrative or character interactions, to those that primarily care about narrative.
Funny that the Mass Effect director felt the need to specifically come out and say they weren't going to "Disney" the art style of Mass Effect and that they will maintain a "mature tone".
Hopefully "mature tone" means no annoying YA Fiction style characters constantly quipping with snarky sarcasm and being overly emotional about banal coming-of-age melodrama, although no word on whether they've found any decent scifi writers that have no problem writing conflict.

It convinces the weak-minded to refuse to breed and not pass on their genes to the next generation.

In that respect, its positive progress.

Mass Effect fans have demonstrated our willingness to NOT buy a Mass Effect game.

Andromeda was 'okay' by many accounts, and sold enough to make profit... barely. They were initially planning multiple DLCs and for it to be the beginning of a new trilogy...

{<diva}

Anyway, there's now a checklist of shit from both Veilguard and Andromeda that we DON'T want in ME5, and multiple of them are deal-breakers.

If that director is smart, he'll demand anyone involved with the planning & writing of Veilguard to be prevented from working on ME5.

You might overestimate the size of your "we"

Wait and see what the sales are on Veilguard because I don't think a 7 or 8 year old game is going to be on their mind. Today's audience will be though.

New ‘Dragon Age’ Game Faced Turbulent Development

Between a 9-year development cycle, including rebooting it from scratch, and the less-than-impressive Steam player numbers... you can't deny the bad reaction from the summer trailer to the bad word-of-mouth from social media and YouTube has taken a large toll on what the sales could/should have been.

EA is being tight-lipped about the development and marketing budgets, as well as the sales numbers... as they have in their recent era.

Uh huh....Just keep waiting for them to make games like you remember them, from 10-20 years ago. I'm sure it will happen

High-quality games?
If Bioware doesn't make them someone else will, like CDPR & Larian who have been making high-quality RPGs since Bioware dropped that ball.

I'm not really interested in their business strategy, I'm just pointing out that Bioware is and always has been a progressive game developer. It wasn't until the misappropriation of the word woke that a certain demographic started complaining about the progressive things they put into their games. Personally, the OG Baldurs Gate was one of the first games I gravitated to, and it was the first RPG I played that allowed me to choose my own skin color and had various other races as companions. I will not defend Bioware on their game quality recently, but "wokeness" has always been a feature of their games. They have been an incredibly inclusive company during my lifetime compared to other game developers.

That is great for you since we are having this conversation the 1970s Soviet union...

Tell me more about that demographic? Is it the magical chuds?

What was progressive about KOTOR 1? A small lesbian romance fits well into the the 2000s.

Baldurs Gate is ancient. I doubt gaming companies sat around trying to prevent people not run around blue, green or black with heir characters.
There was a plenty of fiction where you team up with orks, stop saying it was somehow like having T Coates as a storyteller. It was in an earlier phase of gaming.
Please give me the source on them being more inclusive during their entire history. Whatever the heck that means.

You've made a lot of posts in a thread about a "low quality" game.

You sure that's it? It seems like the game touched you somewhere.

I'm more of a sci-fi fan than a Mass Effect fan specifically. I also play mostly VR games these days, but since they are shifting to UE from Frostbite for the next Mass Effect, that makes VR modding straight forward with UEVR.
While I don't expect much in terms of hard scifi and compelling plot from Mass Effect games, I can still enjoy cheesy space opera and the worldbuilding (mostly the overall art style and detail) and immersion would be main selling points.
Besides that, I don't care about character creators or video game "love interests". I also don't really care about the American culture war at all, but poor writing and obnoxious characters can certainly kill a narrative driven RPG game. Even if any actual roleplaying is pretty minimal.

I get where you're coming from, but the sad fact is when politics infest entertainment to the point the politics become more important than the entertainment it becomes propaganda.

There certainly is politics in quality games as far back as Metal Gear Solid, and as recently as Baldur's Gate 3... but Veilguard and Sweet Baby Inc influenced games are on the other side of the paradyme.

The question is ballance, and if it can be subtle at best, maybe balanced... but then it becomes overbearing to the point you're receiving a lecture in a game you paid damn good money to play.

And I believe games in Australia are a shitload, right?

They do still, they just don’t play video games. They’re simply addicted to the culture war. Imagine if they used this time to actually play games instead.

There are lots of games that invoke the spirit of great titles from those eras, I'd say most of them do. They are just overshadowed by the rot infesting Triple A studios, ie greedy suits and identity politics.

I'm playing between Rogue Trader and Silent Hill 2 atm, and will get back to Aliens Dark Descent. All three studios clearly cared about the source material, these are love letters personified. Space Marine 2 looks like another passion project (haven't played it yet) and BG3, Cyberpunk, and Elden Ring raised the bar in their respective genres.

Hmmm.... You're also posting in a thread about a game you won't play?

I'm going to give this a try for myself. There's no DRM, so it's easy to torrent and try out. That was a smart move by EA to get it into more hands.

The coverage on this game is so schizophrenic. It's a record breaking 10/10 AND a massive flop that the developer has already abandoned at the same time, apparently.

It's a not at all perfect but fun game, in my actual experience
