Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages

Anyone else been using the cycler gun? I haven’t been using any other gun to be honest. This things been destroying everything for me. Love the upgrades that overload groups with electricity. I’ll be switching only to do additional weapon masteries once I get there

Yeah my main rotation has been the Super Shotty, Cycler, and Ravager.

One thing you can say is that all the weapons are viable. I was using the cycler too until upgrading the heaven splitter, which took over as my method of crowd control. Mainly used the SS, Ravager, and the Impaler.

Has anyone upgraded and used the Holy Swarm? At plague level, it just destroys anything in front of you after a perfect parry.

While the caveat of Eternal releasing during the start of quarantine must be stressed. Dark Ages player metrics during launch month on Steam is down over 50% compared to Eternals launch. With a player average and peak closer to Doom 2016 release.

It'll be interesting if id software pivot with Dark Ages DLC.

Not proud, but it’s done. 21 hours in one UV play through, and missing only a few things in a few levels. 4 achievements left. Easy 100% of this game if you’re into that sort of thing.

Would rate it overall a 7. I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed. Just missing that something something to make it a great Doom game.

Last 3.5 levels were fantastic though, especially the last two. If they had that design and energy throughout, it would be an 8. The start of game is just very weak imo, and the Atlan sections can kick rocks. Very very underwhelming. Dragon fares little better, but better than the Atlan stuff isn’t that difficult to achieve. Whoever directed when the music plays, the sound level it plays at, when it spikes, all that, is not utilized correctly. Not sure who that falls on, but the soundtrack is not bad. How they used it certainly is. It would just start getting some steam and killer riffs going, and then it’s over… Maybe it was Mick, and since he left, it wasn’t delivered properly. I’m not entirely sure, but it was disappointing nevertheless

Let’s see what they do in the inevitable dlc. Hoping an all-hell journey. There was far too little of it in the three newer games imo.
Interesting.

I've poo poo'd this game in this thread, but I wanna be clear, it doesn't look BAD, it just doesn't look GREAT.

Mick being gone really had me concerned from the start and this is why. Additionally, having read more and watched more reviews of the game, I think the material they put out about it before launch was on slower settings because it doesn't look slow watching people play. I'm guessing this was done intentionally cuz some people complained about Eternal being too high octane.

I might pick it up on a sale down the line, hard to say at this point.

Though it has a few glaring flaws, it is certainly a GOOD game, just not a great one imo. One thing I wish shooters would do is get rid of, or give the option to get rid of the sound and blurring look when someone sprints. I turn on auto-run whenever the option is there, but the sound and blurring it does gets old. Fast lol.

It absolutely plays faster than one would assume from the videos. I felt the same way prior to playing it, but it controls fine. Maybe a tad less responsive and fast than Eternal, but it is not slow by any means. Probably the slowdown from parrying made us think it was slower than it truly is?

Can't fault you for waiting for a sale. Game Pass having it on day 1 was the only reason I played it so quickly. I probably could not have justified buying it new if I had to.

Interesting to hear your thoughts, but my opinion on any DOOM is that the real game starts at Nightmare, especially if you're experienced at fps. Even with Eternal, I remember restarting not long after initially trying UV because it was too easy, and doing my playthrough on NM. Difficulty and challenge can make a 7/10 experience into an 8 or an 8/10 into a 9, especially with so many options they give for tweaking variables and speed.

This can be corrected. Hopefully they take in on board the feedback because there's nothing quite like getting into that Doom dance of death with some sic metal playing.

Yeah, I cannot imagine the difficulty making it jump up any, as my gripes do not involve the actual combat. It is the design of the levels and art mostly. Alongside a terrible story they should ditch asap imho. Though I will play it on NM after a few months and see how it fares. You could be right, but, it probably won't change my overall opinion of it being a 7/7.5 max for me.

That is good to hear(nyuck). The soundtrack is actually pretty good. Nice poppy, yet deep, bass, reminiscent of the og games. It actually made me smile because I knew they wanted it to sound like that for nostalgia, and I deeply appreciated it.

So what's the consensus here about this game? Seems like opinions are all over the place.

Thanks for the review... and don't worry @ObsoleteSoul

I for one would be happy to send you to hell

Pretty good game. Can’t say I would recommend immediately going out and buying it if you’re not a big fan of either the series or shooters in general. If you are, and have a bit more disposable cash, then you definitely should. It is a very good game.

You can turn off motion blur.

I'm thinking you're right about the parrying, could also be the way the gameplay was demonstrated.

Yeah, I was shocked to learn that's it's $70 for JUST a single player campaign. It's more money for less game than the last two. I was questionable about the game before release and that was really disappointing.

I wanna get Clair Obscur and the Bolivian Remaster at some point and both are much longer for less money.

I didn’t see an option to turn off the blur effect when sprinting. I always turn off regular motion blur.

Tbf, one can’t expect a shooter without mp to have a similar play time as a RPG. CO looks good though, and might be more bang for your buck if you like rpgs more than shooters. I, for the most part, do not, so I would have gotten doom over those two in your case. Still, I hear those games are great, so it seems you can’t go wrong.

Oh weird. That sucks.

Well that's the thing, if there's no MP there has to be more going on (more SP modes) or at the very least the SP needs to be borderline god tier / fairly long and even the most glowing reviews I've seen don't give it that much praise. They all unanimously agree the music isn't as good. This is also the only Doom game except for Doom 64 that doesn't have MP.

2016 and Eternal didn't simply have multiplayer; 2016 also had a map maker and Eternal had Horde Mode, I beat the SP on both multiple times and any review I've seen has said the SP in this is fairly easy for vets. Edit: Eternal also had the Invasion mechanic for campaign.

I like RPGs and shooters, dunno if I'd say one more than the other, my point is simply that this is objectively less game than other recent triple AAA games for more money and it's also less game than the last two in the series for more money. That's an expensive downgrade. Their reasoning was to focus on the SP but pretty much everyone says the story is lame and no one gushes about the mech and dragon sections. Any review I've seen - whether praising or more critical of the game - has overlap on the things they don't like. I feel strongly about it because of my love for the last two games and how high they set the bar. It's really frustrating as a big fan to go from outstanding games to a good game that's more expensive with less features and a fairly divided opinion on the quality of the new combat mechanics.

I think everyone here likes it (to varying degrees) except me, lol. I've enjoyed every other Doom game, but this one just isn't doing it for me. I uninstalled after the first dragon level because I just wasn't having fun, and I don't want to force myself to continue and end up hating it. I will give it another shot down the road, maybe on Switch 2, lol.
Everyone seems to be in agreement that the combat is good/great and does something different from the previous games.

Anyone else feel like there is so much forced hate for this game? Everywhere I go on social media people say it sucks compared to the last two or bring up its low Steam numbers. Doesn't seem like many people are enjoying it. Honestly I wish Steam would just hide that data. All it does is create toxicity. Low steam numbers also probably hurt sales as it makes people think "oh wow that game must suck, I think I'll avoid it". Every damn release now people obsess over those numbers like it's the only thing that matters.

I don't think it's forced. I think a lot of people just don't like the game. The developer is a fan favorite, the previous games were very well-received, and people were eagerly anticipating this one. There wasn't any pre-release hate campaign like with Dragon Age or Assassin's Creed Shadows, so if there is negativity out there, I would guess it's mostly organic. I don't know why, though. Maybe a lot of people are upset that it's not Eternal 2.0.
It pains me to say that I'm not having fun with it, and I honestly kept most of my thoughts to myself because I didn't want to come in here and dump on the game when you guys were enjoying it.
