Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages

Who is the hardest enemy so far?

For me it has to be cyberdemon. He kills me more than anybody else and I still don't really have a good strategy.
Hmm, I’m usually just in his face parrying his stomps and sword slashes and then blasting him down with the double barrel. I haven’t really had an issue with him.

Most annoying enemy I’ve found are the Whiplashes. One of my least favorite enemies in Eternal and now I don’t have a freeze grenade.

I decided to fire up Doom 2016 again, as it never clicked with me, same for Eternal. I really want to play Dark Ages but I want to be up to speed with tje story.

My impressions on 2016 initially is that it was more of a wave shooter. It kind of is, but there's lots of fun exploration. It helps that my PC is far better now, but damn it's smooth and visceral, music is epic too.

I got about 5 hours in now and loving it. I'm not sure what my problem was back then lol.

I'll finish that and try Enernal again too before jumping into this. Hopefully this is another late bloomer for Dark Souls for me, as that took a while to click as well.

I would love for this to be the last Doom game for at least 10 years, to give the franchise a much-needed break. I feel The Dark Ages is an excellent stopping point because we've already seen such a vast array of environments and gameplay styles.

What I would like to see id do next is a badass third-person game, to distance itself from Doom and give them a fresh start.
Hate to say it, but I agree. Not nearly done with this one, but, it feels like this has run its course. Still having a great time, though it is definitely my least favorite main Doom title, and from 2016 to this, they kept getting further away from what I personally enjoy about Doom the most. They should have saved the alien stuff for Quake, where it would have made more sense.

Maybe with some time and new perspectives, they will bring something different again, and surprise us all.

That said, it is a power fantasy, and it doesn't fail on that aspect. The weapons are great and all have a unique feel to them, and the game does force you to mix and match with different enemy types, so you don't get too reliant on one or the other. The results of your blasting and punching never fail to impress, with it's spectacular gore effects and 'splosions.
This term 'power fantasy' is a new one to me. I heard the devs mentioning it and I get they have taken that to the next level. Doom guy is now a big walking tank, even his footsteps sound heavy and big explosions everywhere...appeals to the casual who just wants to blow things up. Yet that to me was never the essence of the DOOM games it was more a side part and stylistic element. At it's heart DOOM games have been about skill development and the sense of 'power' comes from being able to clear out rooms of demons with precision and getting better.

You take that away and give people the 'power fantasy' without skill requirement and just booming and smashing things with no difficulty it becomes dangerously close to becoming a 'man-child fantasy' especially with those big oedipal looking fat demons they like to put everywhere.

I hadn't played DOOM for about 30 years until 2016 and got bored after the first couple of chapters. Same formula I remember as ever, circle strafe shoot jump circle strafe repeat. I get that they wanted to introduce it to a new audience and pay homage to the original but I was suprised I was getting feelings of monotony that reminded of just DOOM or Quake with better graphics. Eternal on the other hand was what OG DOOM was for this era; a ground breaking and inovative game the pushed the genre to new heights.

I totally agree. I think it comes down to "show, don't tell", basically. In Doom and Doom II, you feel like a badass because you're mowing down tons of powerful demons singlehandedly. That was more than enough. Eternal and Dark Ages feel the need to constantly tell the player what a badass the Doom Slayer is, and it feels forced.

I think you are really selling 2016 short here. Almost every big FPS at the time was a shooting gallery. Walk into an area, enemies spawn, shoot them until your screen turns red, hide behind a wall until the red disappears, continue. People always say that Doom 2016 went back to its roots, but I don't think that's really true. It was a total paradigm shift. Instead of shooting from a distance and hiding while your health regenerated, you had to push foward into the enemies, doing glory kills to recover health. You chainsaw enemies to recover your ammo. You're literally chasing enemies down. It was a complete inversion of the genre. Glory kills aren't just a neat flourish, they're the concept the whole game revolves around and what separated it from other shooters, including the other Dooms.
That said, probably my biggest complaint of 2016 is that the game is too long. I think they could have shortened it up for a tighter, better experience.

There's really no difference here. All "power fantasy" really means is that you play a powerful character that that uses powerful weapons to kill and blow shit up to a Michael Bay degree. Most shooters are power fantasies of sorts, unless they're pure sims.

Skill can be a part of it, but it's not necessary. The originals are still power fantasy games regardless of skill level. You don't need skills to use one of the stupid powerful guns to turn a room of demons into a puddle of goo. That's all it really means. Using big fuck you weapons and skills to make you feel powerful. The more over the top it gets, the more "powerful" you feel. Dungeon crawlers like Diablo are power fantasies too.

I think if they made those levels shorter, it would have been fine. Some of those levels, especially in Eternal(looking at you, super gore nest!) are FAR too long imo

Power fantasy means you feel as badass as you should for a guy in this scenario. It doesn’t mean easy. Eternal was the ultimate power fantasy because you were able to overcome any of those obstacles because you’re a fucking badass killing machine.

Yes, but the point is you earn that feeling in Eternal and the older games. If you don't get good you just die again and again which is not a powerful feeling at all. The slayers vulnerability means that power = skill

DA seems to want to give you that feeling regardless by making the slayer and weapons sound and feel tough and making it easy to progress.

That’s just how you want to define it. If you didn’t feel like a badass ripping the spines out of demons because you were dying then it’s really just your perspective. They both are inherently Power Fantasies, same with 2016.

The Slayer is a badass who does badass shit. It’s really as simple as that.

Well I disagree, but maybe I'm just oldskool then.
I would gradually feel more like a badass in all the DOOM games when I either cleared out the rooms or when I had good run navigating the chaos and almost did in a frenzy of slaying.
Not so much when I pushed the button and it went into glory kill animation like mortal kombat and I thought "what a badass I am" and then died immediately after.

I've been through the dragon level twice now and I'm still only at 89% wtf

The first one? Are you not able to find the Titan encounters?
Yeah chapter 5. I'm missing a bunch of stuff including the challenges. I must have skipped an entire area or something.

Is it possible to finish the level without clearing all four hell carriers? And are all the cultist circles in the same location? I only found one of them.

I honestly don’t know. I blew up all of them. The cultists are spread throughout the level.

Fuck I'll have to do it again tomorrow. I don't get it though. I'm checking my map constantly looking for all these secrets but they're so well hidden in this game.

Damn dude, you are SO right. I just tried the Super Shotgun against him and he goes down SO fast that way! All you basically have to do is shoot, then parry--rinse, repeat. After just a few point-blank shots he's done for. If you encounter him from afar, you can also use a Shield Bash to instantly close the distance and do a bit of damage in the process. When you do that he'll almost immediately swing at you with a (parryable) attack though, so you have to be ready to parry instantly or else you're going to take massive damage.

I'm halfway now. I also went back and cleared the remaining items in the dragon level. Turns out I had completely missed the second secret area so I guess it must be optional.
