Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages

Looks like it unlocks at the same time everywhere.

Yeah no extra early access for me. I just got the actual shipped notice from PS Direct.
That sucks. I don't know whether to believe it but some people swear they're playing already. Apparently discs still require a download but there's no hold on it so you should be able to play pretty much as soon as it's delivered.

I have early access but I imagine Steam will be following the global release schedule so Monday night for me. Shame it didn't drop before the weekend.

Did anybody mention yet that The Dark Ages will only have 85 MB on the disc and the rest must be downloaded? At what point do you think the physical collectors will just give up and go digital? They might be doing this on purpose to get people to change their purchasing habits. Look at Switch 2. They're doing some crap like this too. Got to wonder how much longer people will even want to buy the discs.

Also apparently the PS5 Pro version is barely an upgrade over the base model. Looks like it was kind of half-assed. Still looking forward to the game but there's been some disappointing news surrounding the release.

Supposedly Indiana Jones was the same so I'm guessing it's a Bethesda thing with the on disc content.

I know Xbox only use 50gb blu rays but offer smart delivery for both Xbox One and the Series consoles (I think it's the Xbox One versions on disc, been a while since I last checked) but seeing as PS5 uses 100gb discs there's plenty of room for most games these days, even Square let everyone know early that the game would be on two discs with FF7 Rebirth if they went physical

Done on purpose but not for the main reason you are speculating.

Games of this size are worked on up till release date. Sometimes even including day one patches and patches on the days post launch. This means files on the physical disc can be upwards of 45 days old to meet production quotas for launch. In a industry where digital distribution dwarfs physical from increased broadband access.

It’s almost as insulting as providing an empty case. I’m still not going digital until it’s no longer an option.

Waiting to see if my PC can run it competently.

There is an article where the testers successfully got it to run on a system with an i7 9700k and an nvidia RTX 2060

This comment does not make a lot of sense to me

The old RTX 2060 can't get anywhere near 60 fps, but that's partly down to the Core i7 9700K it was paired with. It doesn't seem to be down to a lack of threads (it's an 8-core, 8-thread CPU) but more a case of the whole system not having enough performance to ensure the 2060 is never left waiting for data or instructions.
I believe the RTX 2060 was the lowest spec RTX card made during that gen- anything below that was branded GTX and could not do ray tracing. I have an RTX 4080 with i7 9700k, so that should be a significant boost over the 2060, but this tester is saying the CPU may or may not be enough.

For EVERY SINGLE OTHER GAME I OWN on PC my system be like

Yeah we don't know how important the cpu is going to be yet. The required specs say it needs 8c/16t but who knows. Your cpu doesn't have hyperthreading and only has 8c/8t so it might be a bottleneck. Mine only has 6c/12t so I'm a little nervous too.

There’s spoilers all over YouTube already and people playing it WTF. Didn’t expect that in my feed.

You sure about that?

I don't remember using a shield, throwing it, and using it deflect projectiles in COD.

I don't remember flying dragons in COD either.. but that might be me, I don't get each version every year. When did the sci fi fantasy version of COD come out?

Dex just posted on this. Combat loop is arguably Doom at its best(!) but level design questionable:

Doom: The Dark Ages has an exceptional combat loop that is among the best in series history. However, in a desire to expand on a winning formula, id Software has fallen short of the high bar it set with Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

Although id may have changed up the formula, they’ve struck gold for a third time running. They’ve managed this by slowing down the pace and forcing players to stand their ground in what often becomes a bullet hell shooter. During its best moments, it’s one of the most satisfying FPS games I’ve played in some time.

However, monotonous level design fails to keep up the momentum in broader open areas, the story struggles greatly from pacing issues, and new dragon-riding and mech-piloting sections leave a lot to be desired.

I read the whole review; I'm probably going to skip this one entirely. Mick not being involved and them slowing the gameplay rubbed me the wrong way from the onset but I was still willing to give it a chance if it was innovative but "meh" level design and so-so soundtrack is a huge turnoff.

2016 and Eternal set the bar too high and this one doesn't even have any multiplayer to speak of. They're allergic to just giving it a standard multiplayer. I also don't like my movement options being limited after experiencing Eternal.

I'm not dropping $70 for a slow "decent" Doom game with no multiplayer.

Played for a couple of hours. The power fantasy and chaotic battles are still 100% here. I’m obviously still just scratching the surface of the combat but it’s been excellent so far. The mechanics that are presented with just the shield alone are staggering. The parry is easier to pull off than I thought, guess I’ve been playing too much Khazan because I was expecting much tighter windows.

Playing through on UV like god intended and I’ve had to scrape by a few battles. The adage that was presented in Eternal that stopping your movement means death is still the case here. There are hordes of enemies that flood the arenas and you’re getting attacked from every side. Instead of vaulting around though you’re planted firmly on the ground and zipping around smashing everything in sight with your shield.

Immediately one of the best feelings I’ve experienced and one I don’t see myself getting tired of is seeing a horde below you and launching yourself straight into them from a cliff above.

Having a blast with it so far.

It’s not slow in the slightest lol.
