Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages

It looks slow compared to 2016 and especially Eternal.
Everything looks slow relative to Eternal but the Slayer isn’t a plodding tank. It’s more like a tank with a rocket attached to the back. It’s just played horizontally instead of vertically like Eternal. It reminds me more of how a classic Doom game plays.

It’s still frenetic, maybe not to the extent that Eternal was but it’s still fast paced.

It's okay so far. I think I had a much better first impression with Eternal. The open battlefields are going to take time to adjust to and I hate that we lost glory kills. The thing they replaced them with is just not the same at all. I know their argument but I think it kind of falls flat honestly. Even in Eternal, the glory kills were so quick that it barely took you out of the action. This game is so dark and a lot of the enemies are also dark so it would have been nice to see them up close getting fucked up. Maybe they just didn't want to do all that extra animation. Last, the music doesn't hit the way the last two games did. I appreciate them trying new things out though, it's easy for devs to get complacent and just stick with what works. I'll see how I feel when I finish it but so far I'm kind of mixed on it. I will absolutely finish this and the DLC. It's still fun but I'm not blown away yet.

That's cool, I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'll check out a couple more reviews but it doesn't look like my cup of tea. I don't want a classic Doom game, I liked 2016 and Eternal and I really like the mechanics Eternal introduced.

Obviously it plays nothing like a classic Doom game but I meant that the gameplay loop is situated around staying on the ground and dealing with hordes of enemies.

A lot of people hated or didn’t get what Eternal was trying to do and I could see the same thing here.

You can still glory kill. It might be related to launching yourself above them or something but they’re still there. The executions just keep the action flowing. Glory killing this many enemies would bring everything to a halt imo.

Yeah I played about half of the second level this morning and figured out how to decapitate the hell knights by jumping on them. I think the devs will go back to glory kills in the next game. I’ve heard so many complaints about their removal. Liking the second level over the first a bit more. Prefer the corridor style over open battlefield.

Sounds like they tested them with this gameplay style and it wasn’t fun.

Glad the option is still there but it doesn’t need to happen for the dozens of demons in every fight.

Oh yeah, I know what you meant.

Eternal definitely ramped things up to 11, straight up coke fueled ADHD Crank Jason Statham Territory, but that was my jam lol. In fact I've been meaning to replay it.

You sure about that?

I don't remember using a shield, throwing it, and using it deflect projectiles in COD.

I don't remember flying dragons in COD either.. but that might be me, I don't get each version every year. When did the sci fi fantasy version of COD come out?

Its a term coined during Doom 4 development. Indicating design choices geared towards chasing popular gaming trends for wider audience appeal.

I played it a bit tonight. My first impressions are fine but I do miss the movement of Eternal, this game feels a bit more sluggish and flat but is satisfying in its own way. The new shield/movement concepts I've gotten used to quickly, interested to see new weapons and enemies

It’s one of my all time favorite shooters. Playing TAG 1/2 on Nightmare is easily one of the most intense experiences I’ve ever had.

Yeah we don't know how important the cpu is going to be yet. The required specs say it needs 8c/16t but who knows. Your cpu doesn't have hyperthreading and only has 8c/8t so it might be a bottleneck. Mine only has 6c/12t so I'm a little nervous too.
Putting this video in spoilers as this guy is playing through entire levels of the game. He has a whole series of videos on this.

He's running an i7 9700k, RTX 4080 Super with 32GB of RAM on Ultra Nightmare at 1440P

He's getting lows of 130 FPS and highs of over 160 FPS

This game will be very playable on my rig- I may just crank it up to 4K- if I get north of 100 FPS I will be happy as a pig in shit.

I'm supposed to get this for free with my new laptop purchase, still don't have the code. Hope ASUS doesn't screw me over.

Pretty hilarious to see how much of Hugo’s time working on Pacific Rim is showing. The mech section I played through was so much fun. It felt every bit how piloting a 200 ft mech should.

The dragon section was not quite as fun. Concept was cool but execution wasn’t really what I’d hoped. Thankfully it breaks it up between dragon and Slayer which definitely helps.

Unlocking quite a few weapons now and the highlight so far has been the Skull Crusher. Just completely awesome in function and design.

I’m still not getting the sluggish comments. I’m running, jumping, flying all over the battlefields. You feel the weight but it moves effortlessly.

Watched some more clips and such on it, and it looks better than I thought it would. Movement-wise. Seems most are having no issues, and the videos seem to look fairly fast overall.

Only wish they would have more of that old-school imagery. Some pentagrams, blood waterfalls and other demonic shit. I know it is unrealistic with the newer storyline, but I do miss that the most from the older games. Would have been especially cool since this one is darker in tone, at least from the videos and all.
