News Dominick Cruz Officially Retires

Dom Dom Dom The Man the legend. HOF bound... Hope this year.

A really good case study of how to amplify the effectiveness of striking and grappling entries by attacking from favorable angles.

While I believe that TJ figured him out in R3 and essentially wrote the blueprint for how to beat him (regardless of the final decision,) Cruz's ability to position himself at angles that were extremely difficult to defend/attack should (IMO of course) be studied by every coach and upcoming fighter.
Yeah, and that was 4 years after Cruz got sidelined with ACL injuries. Dominick had only fought once in the 5 years prior to that fight, and I don't think he had quite the same speed/mobility as he did before injuries.

Cruz was the fucking man. Sucks he went out on another injury. His comeback to beat Dillashaw for the title was all time stuff. From trouncing Bowles, who was on a ridiculous run at the time, into a corner stoppage; beating Jorgenson's ass at WEC 53; and shutting out Faber in all their rematches, Cruz had a very memorable career in my eyes. One of the best to ever do it, if you didn't see the early part of his career, you missed an opportunity to see a master tactician ply his trade to great effect. Cruz will never be appreciated as he should be.

Bowles, another career tragically cut short for very different reasons. I wonder what happened to that guy? According to this old thread, someone checked in 2020 and said he couldn't find any record of Marky Mark Wahlburg Jr. still being incarcerated.

He got out. I saw he had an IG page where he was coaching.

I love the fighting style he had when he was at his peak. Nothing but 50/50 feints, until his opponents started freaking out and responding to shit that wasn't even happening. It was masterful and fun to watch.

I hope he enjoys his retirement from the sport.

Sucks to go out like this but well past time. Wish we could have seen him fight Aldo.

the way he fought and trained and the weight cut it was never sustainable. and imo was a lead cause to his excessive and consistent injuries. although it proved to be effective it may have been more effective at defeating him than anything else. .

Retiring in an injury w/o a fight. :/

Only Aldo & Jones left from Famous 2012-13 champ crew.
Which both may retire this year. :(

Best BW Of All Time? Thoughts?

It’s not at all surprising given his history of injury, but it’s still stings to have to go out like that, not fighting.
But it was pretty obvious he needed to make this decision. Still one of my favorite fighters ever, I feel like he’s still the standard for dominate champs. I’m such a fan I still haven’t watched his fight against Garbrandt lol.
Best wishes!

It actually pisses me off this guy doesn’t get the respect he deserves for being one of the very best to ever do it. Won’t forget when he big brothered Mighty Mouse or took the belt from TJ; WAR Cruz!

I would say don’t watch the Garbrandt fight; but when I watched it, it didn’t make me feel bad for Cody when he got KO’d like 4 times in a row.

Lol I still got the relief of Cody going down the drain after that career defining performance but these days I don’t have anything against him.
I feel like he(Cody) accomplished the most rewarding goal on behalf of Team Alpha Male. Championship or not.

that's classy IMO retiring after the injury instead of prolonging it any further. good for him, and great career.
