Does Ryan Garcia slip and roll with punches like an elite or is he a one trick pony?

If we go just by defence, is he at the level of his ranking?

No. His defense is trash. He relies too heavily on his reflexes not on sound fundamentals. Against Haney he was actually turning his back when pressed. Defensively responsible fighters would never make this mistake. It's a cardinal sin. Amateurs know better.

No, he doesn’t do any of that.

Ryan’s only defensive move is to extend his lead arm towards his opponent and jump back in a straight line.

His real defense is his offense. If he can’t outperform his opponent offensively, he loses.

everytime i have seen him he has looked terrible, im not quite sure how he made it as far as he did, i guess he has a lot of power in the left and is athletic, his boxing skills seem very basic

This has to be a troll thread. Ryan Garcia and slip and roll go together as fluidly as Guillermo Rigondeaux and the peekaboo guard

Have you seen him fight? His boxing defense is rudimentary, at best. His weird version of the shoulder roll I guess could confuse an opponent at first but he still gets hit. And he's almost turning his back to his opponent when he does this.
Garcia relies on his excellent reflexes and hand speed. Once he gets older, if he is still boxing, it's gonna be a sharp downfall

It doesn't have to look good, it doesn't have to be conventional, but it has to work.

Not known for ducking, rolling, slipping, mostly use the long guard with a lead extended arm while moving backward in a linear fashion, a bit of more diversity could benefit him more.

But in the end it works, his hands speed is worldclass, his left hook is worldclass, Ryan Garcia always had been the embodiment of talent over hard work, god bless him, started early on since his youth, very athletic.

We all thought Haney would school him, he destroyed Haney who is supposed to be better at least defensively.

No, but it surprises me because the lighter weights is supposed to be the technical divisons

You can be technical at any weight. Look at Usyk, or Jai Opetaia.
And you can be a slugger at any weight. Look at William Zepeda.
Ryan Garcia does two things really well - a left hook and following up punches with combinations. That's got him to where he is at today. Sometimes a one (or two) trick pony works for a while.

i think you're onto something. the guy has what appears to be a chaotic personal life. and all of the accusations of drug use, partying excessively, etc. none of that stuff really flies if you wanna be the best of the best (with some notable exceptions)

your hunch might be correct. Garcia may have got a taste of the commitment and hard work being a top level guy takes, and he decided he didnt want it and is just falling back on his natural talents
