Nobody said anything about contentment. The question is whether he is funny. He's made a massive amount of money - which is a broadly accepted measure of professional success - as a comedian and comedic actor because most people find him very funny.

Well of course most find him funny. But I think most find him funny in the 80s more than the rest of his career. And some people don't find him funny at all. Which the purpose of this thread / poll. And the results speak for themselves.

The most recent one I saw was Norbit.

That seems to be widely regarded as one of his low points, but I still liked it, so I expect I would like his other new stuff as well.

He had some great movies in the 1980s and 90s.

Coming to America and Life are two of my favorite films.

Most people don't know that Eddie Murphy was originally written into the first Star Trek IV scripts, as demanded by the studio.

But Nimoy, and Shatner to an extent, thought that he would take away their thunder and timed him out of the project.

After which, they changed the story to whales and wrote in the love interest with the beautiful Catherine Hicks.

Never been a fan, watched Raw some years ago and it was dated as fuck.

His body of work in the 80s goes unmatched in the movie industry. The undisputed king.

I've never "gotten" him. He peaked on SNL. His stand-up was okay and his Klump shit was a pop culture phenomenon, but his movies mostly suck and they got worse and worse as time went on. I'll always love the buddy cop movie he made with De Niro Showtime, but I'll never understand the people who worship him as some comedy God.

I loved him as Axel Foley and can't imagine anyone else bringing char to life as he had. Witty, charming, eyes on him every scene because of his electricity...

He has a few really good comedies from that time period like Trading Places, which is a killer flick, but his material from later decades like the Dolittle stuff isn't good to me.

Voted option #2 but with the caveat that he did super as VA for the donkey in Shrek across, what, 4 films? 80s stuff + Shrek VA for me.

Life from the late 1990s is one of his best/funniest movies.

Probably something to do with the highest grossing standup special in human history.

This isn't exactly a boast considering very few specials have ever been released theatrically. Chris Rock also has the most-viewed live-streamed comedy special in human history...out of two.
