It’s kinda strange to see career military vets be fans of small government. They could give up their benefits and enter the private sector and never even have enlisted had they felt that strongly about it

I gave up my benefits. No pension or Healthcare here. I worked in the private sector for 15 years before getting into the military.

I have also worked in a 4 star headquarters. I am quite familiar with where we are in the bloated organizational structure.

I don't know if they add value or not but my question is different.

Don't these people have to get promoted into these positions? Doesn't that imply that they earned their stars through years of service?

So, are we firing them just to fire them? Or is their knowledge base no longer relevant?

The latter makes sense, the former doesn't. You don't fire your most accomplished employees just because you have more of them than in the past. You fire them because they're redundant or outdated or something similar.

Someone in the military will have to explain to me how reducing the number of generals from 44 (I think that was the initial number) to 35 (a 20% reduction) benefits the military. I genuinely don't know enough to assess that.

I can answer most of that for you.

1) 4 star Generals (3 star to some degree) are highly political positions. The experience these guys bring are highly subjective. Like anything there are good and bad.

2) Many of these guys work outside of the traditional military structures - think Pentagon adjacent. Some are given jobs and groomed far beyond their usefulness. My experience is the 2 star staff do the heavy lifting.

3) Each of these guys have MASSIVE staffs depending on the position. My experience was with USAEUR but I worked all over Europe and did a lot of interaction with the AF and NATO. Very little with Navy and Marines.

These staffs have a lot of redundant functions. So if you reduce a few 4 star billets you are gaining efficiencies in the associated staff. THOUSANDS of useless staff officers that could be better served elsewhere. I think this is where the SECDEF sees value.

4) Look up the "Army Futures Command. What a fucking boondoggle.

1.) did you partake in WWII? And don’t come at me with “my family memebers….” Ya mine did too. FDR was also the president during that time and his socialist policies and government programs is what helped this nation form a robust middle class and a robust military. You’re welcome for socialism

Just overall treating military folks like Lego men instead of service members.

The intent in firing senior leadership is not to trim the fat.... they couldn't care less as Trump's birthday military parade, gold dome bullshit etc. demonstrates...it's to eliminate institutional memory and try to eliminate anybody that might oppose the illegal acts to come.

In follow up:

1) Politicized, I can get. But aren't they still career military members who have decades of experience? Or is that an oversimplification of how they reached their rank?

2) Can you break this down for me in greater detail? I don't have the experience to know what this means in practical terms.

3) Why not just trim their staff? In other industries, they might make senior managers share their support staff (one secretary for 2-3 senior personnel instead of everyone have their own). Is that not feasible in this circumstance and if not, why not?

4) I'll look it up but I haven't done so as of this post.
