Bisping may have been the lineal champ, but he was clearly cherry picked, and he had also cherry picked Dan Henderson before GSP. It's very possible, if not likely, that Bisping wouldn't have been champion by the time GSP would have came back if he had fought a contender (calling Hendo a contender at that time is being nice) who wasn't ancient.
GSP beat the champion of the division in Bisping, and Bisping took it from the rightful champion, in Rockhold, and Rockhold, beat the legit champ, in Weidman and so on. Quit hating on a clean natty GOAT.
Jones beat a contender in Gane for the undisputed HW title, who had just lost to the rightful champion in Ngannou, and then cherry picked an 8th ranked, 42 year old Stipe who had been out of competition for 3 years and 8 months. A man who also happened to be coming off a knock out loss to Ngannou.
In my opinion it would make Jon's rise much more credible if he had come in and either fought Ngannou for the belt, or taken the path that he did, just without gaining the belt, and rising through the ranks.
I'm not gonna say that Tom isn't a paper champ either if he had the undisputed title, but at least he came up through the ranks blasting everyone he came across. It's the UFC that messed this who situation up, and the only way to fix is is for Jon to stop pussyfooting around, man up, and fight Tom Aspinall.

GSP actually beat the real champion first of all. Second, he vacated the belt instead of holding onto it for years, refusing contenders and allowing there to be an interim champ who not only holds the second belt but defends it.

I understand your reasoning however Ping won vs Rockhold which neither him nor Luke was champ material and sat on the belt taking ridiculous fights. Jones bu default of actually beating noncompromised humans I respect more than GSP
Ignoring "not champ material" being used to describe legitimate champions (especially one who was widely considered to be the most well rounded and skilled athlete in the division, just with a terrible fight IQ defensively) you considering Hendo (who had just beaten a ranked fighter 4 months before fighting Bisping) "sitting on the belt for a ridiculous fight" but Stipe a "noncompromised human" is a stretch and a half
