Very popular dish in the UK. Is it popular in the states?

Not really.

Yes, fried fish certainly exists and you can get fish and fries here and there. But it's not especially popular.

When I was a kid, there were Arthur Treacher's fish & chips, but they're long gone.
Long John Silver's has fried fish and fries - but they're almost gone, too. And the fish wasn't even their best item anyway.
Friday Night All You Can Eat Fried Fish specials used to be a popular thing, but they seem to be fading away, too.

It depends. In America they use too much tartar sauce and flesh of the fish isn't as meaty/flakey. They don't have the mushy peas, the vinegar or the gravy on the side. I think you at least need that. I can do without the pickled eggs and fried oreos found in chip shops.
{<huh}

I'm American. I HATE tartar sauce. I've been to England many times, but the vast majority of the time I've had fish and chips, it was in the US. NO ONE puts the tartar sauce on it when they serve it to you. It's given to you as a condiment on the side, and you can choose to use as little or as much as you want, or not at all, which is what I opt to do. Have you actually had fish and chips in the US, or are you assuming?

Of course it's tartar sauce on the side. I think you misunderstood. Most American fish and chips don't have the vinegar option. It is mainly tartar sauce that they give you. You just raw dog fish and chips dry?

No I use malt vinegar. They serve it in New England where I come from. Granted, New England is different from other parts of the US. Fair enough. The way you worded it was a bit confusing.

PS - If not malt vinegar, then lemon.

I’ve never not had vinegar served with my fish and chips.
I know. American fish and chips is usually tartar sauce and coleslaw on the side. You might get a lemon wedge. Vinegar isn't really a common American thing for fish and chips. Some places in America even give you that red sauce they use for seafood.

I’m American. I’ve literally always had it served with malt vinegar, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and lemon. Might be where you live.

Really though its the kind of thing I'd imagine not doing well as a franchise which tends to dominate in the US, very dependant on the quality of the fish.

I'll eat it but I never really order it. It would have to be a place that was famous for it. Probably haven't had it in 10+ years.

Not fish.

One battered sausage, one regular sausage, chips, all coated in loads of salt and vinegar.

Can of coke on the side.

Love it.

I have it very rarely, but it brings back childhood memories...

Love fish and chips. I need lemon wedge and/or malt vinegar and tartar sauce. When I make this at home I use cod

i only eat fish and chips when i'm in AUS/NZ/UK.won't even try them anywhere else.

not something i eat often, but yeah, its a classic aussie/british thing

I'm thinking getting some today after 4 months I believe. Craving for it for some reason.

I prefer getting halibut.
