Always having been a fan of hot mustard and horseradish, I have (not so) recently discovered the joys of wasabi. Now I know that most of the bullshit us Mericans are exposed to is nothing more than rebranded horseradish and/or mustard seed with some green food coloring added to make it 'look' legit. (Yes, mustard and horseradish are kissing cousins of wasabi) REAL wasabi rhizome is incredibly hard to grow and is very hard to come by unless you live in Japan or have ties to the Chinese mafia.

So needless to say, Im not entirely sure if I have even come close to 'real' wasabi (even the extract) but today, I (hopefully) have come close to the real deal with some wasabi infused oil.

Nice flavor. Clears the sinuses (kinda) and the bottle has (some sort of asian) characters all over it so it *must* be legit right?

Now this is the part that made me a little uncomfortable... I understand how difficult it is to procure wasabi and some of the measures that must be done to get it, but this... This is borderline unacceptable.

I am planning a wasabi oil and hot cheetos run in the not so distant future. Ill be sure to post the results of that if my nuts drop enough and actually sprout some hairs.

Oh and Fuck you Photobucket...

Wasabi and horse radish taste like the water from inside a super soaker to me.

I just can't get down on it.

P.S. your photos are amazing.

I often find myself trying to consume to the point of where I am gagging and squirting tears from the intensity of the 'heat'. And every breath is almost like setting your lungs on fire too.

My ex wife used to get mad at me when we hit the steak houses.
That shit makes me smile.

wasabi is not mustard with food colouring.

Wasabi is mashed wasabi plant

That is REAL wasabi rhizome. The crap we see with our sushi order is nothing more than horseradish/mustard seed. Even the extracts that are online are suspect. And FWIW you don't 'mash' the rhizome to prepare your wasabi, you should use a sharkskin grater for best results.
They say the flavor of real wasabi is less heat and more complex.

I love spiciness, but I cannot do wasabi or horseradish. I hate that feeling like a match is being lit in your nose. Maybe some day I will come around on them though.

I don’t think TS was saying real wasabi is mustard with food coloring, he’s saying for most “wasabi” sold in the US it is mustard (or horseradish) with food coloring. Which is fairly accurate.

its funny as different people experience that wasabi or horseradish buzz differently.

For me it feels like someone is running electric current from the rear to the front of my brain. I feel this moving current that is zapping me. I love it.

I like to have hookers snort wasabi lines off my asshole and film it for fun. It gets me off and the look on their faces...priceless

I'm the guy who eats wasabi by itself. I've develop a fondness for that buzz, but I started it mostly to reset my taste buds, followed with a bite of ginger, to prepare for the next piece of sushi.

I definitely prefer the dense weight of the endorphin rush from pepper heat. I especially love the religious experience when you’re battling the upper echelons of the scoville scale. I’ll take that experience over wasabi/horseradish any day. I do enjoy spicy mustard from time to time, but in moderation.

They are such different experiences for me that I do not even compare them. I like a nice hot pepper or pepper sauce but that is a burn or heat feel. You eat it and it lingers. Again for me wasabi/horseradish is more of an electric current shock type thing. Its instant and then its gone with zero remnants. Quite a weird experience.

Wasabi tastes like something nature never intended to be food.
