It's an interesting topic. Personally I think the key to the whole thing is that men will more readily settle for women less attractive then they are because they put a higher premium on sex. This results in the highest value men offering themselves sparingly to less attractive women, which skews the long-term expectations of those women and essentially eliminates less attractive men from sexual candidacy.
This whole process has been exaggerated by the shift away from monogamy and the streamlining of the courting ritual into nothing more than a swipe and a few text messages. I'd have a pretty high opinion of myself too if I could log into any dating app and receive so many offers for sex that it actually became a nuisance.
